Starter Contact Clip

I searched and read the posts about replacing the contacts on a 3.4L starter. It was on the YT forum. I have this issue, but I realized that the clip that the wire hooks up to is broken. I saw the contact clip off the starter.

The black plastic clip on this picture.

The clip is loose from the housing. Is there a way to reattach that without buying a new starter? Has anyone soldered this back on?

I'm curious about this too, can you post a link to the other posts about this please? Is it a common problem for the contacts to go bad on these starters?

I've been having intermittent problems - I turn the key, truck goes clicky, clicky instead of vroom, vroom. (Sorry for the technical jargon)Then a minute later it starts right up.

I called an auto electric place and the guy told me that these starters are known for the contacts being the weak link and going out at about 80-90K miles. (I've got 150K)

Where's the cheapest place you guys have found for starters?

Napa quoted me $136 for reman. and $140 for new.

Hey Whipkiller,

If the contacts are the only problem, you can buy them at your local Toyota dealer for $11. There are a few starter contact replacement threads around as well that are fairly easy to accomplish, even if you're not very mechanically inclined (like myself). As for the black clip, I'm not sure if that's replacable or not. I would imagine it can come off, you can take it to your Toyota dealership and see if they have a piece to replace it.

That could come in very handy, it's sounding more and more like this is my problem. I hope the wife doesn't get mad when I drag our computer out into the driveway and set it up underneath my truck so I can look at your thread while I'm doing this!:keyboard:

Heck, for $11 in parts, even if that isn't the fix it won't hurt.
 
Whipkiller- hit Print Screen and only take the paper out and under the truck. That way you dont get in trouble for having the computer out there. It is a common problem with these vehicles and an hour or two in the driveway with $15-$25 in parts is cheaper then an hour or two and a $180 new starter, when your old one was fine other then the soft copper contacts being worn.
 
I looked for the black clip in my parts database. It does not have its own part number, it's just part of the whole solenoid assembly (part No. 28150-62050 on my truck--it goes by VIN, so I don't know about yours, but it looks the same.) But you can use that number at the dealer for them to pull up a diagram that will allow you to point out what you need, then they can run your VIN.

Oh great, now what am I gonna' do with the 150' of coax that I ran out to the driveway so I'd have internet access under the truck?!:ybrick:

Thats why I hate Cable Modems....:lmao:
Well have fun with it, snaking the starter out of hte wheel well can be a pain. Once it is out it only takes about 15 minutes.
