Starter, ignition or coils?

Hi fellas. I am new to the forum. So I have a puzzle I am trying to figure out. On my 1998 4runner, it has recently been giving me trouble to start. There are times where I will turn the ignition all the way to the start position and nothing will happen. I will then turn it back to "off" and then try it again. This will happen for two or three more times. I do not hear the starter turning. Eventually the engine will start like normal.

It feels like something electrical to me. Battery is fairly new. Could it be the ignition?

I had the exact same problem. Just had the coils replaced and it seems to be back to normal now.

agree that it sounds on the surface like a starter....suggestions......

1. when it doesn't turn, open hood and tap on starter. Try again and see if it fires up. That's a good indication it's the starter

2. Remove starter and take it to auto parts store - they will typically bench test it for free.

i would say starter contacts, u should open it and u will tell. buy new set of cotacts - about 18-19.00 dollars and replace them urself
