Starter in PITA Location on V8

Today I got a glimpse of what you have to go through when your starter needs to be replaced on a V8.

My mechanic had in his shop a 1998 Landcrusier with a 4.7L V8 with 120,000 miles. It was in for a new starter. Has anyone seen or know what has to be done? The entire Intake has to be removed to gain access to the starter. A whole lot of labor for a starter. I wonder if the starter is in the same place on today's 4.7L V8. I think the engine was a 2UZ-FE or something like that I don't recall exactly. What is the model of V8 in a 2006? I know I could look but it's 11:00PM and it's too cold to go outside right now to find out

You can do a search on this, as I remember it has been discused before. I believe the V8 still has the starter located on top of the engine, just under the intake manifold.

Toy starters are built very solid. The starter is under the Intake manifold. The coolant must be drained to remove a couple of heater hoses, all injectors unplugged, and the Intake manifold removed to access the starter motor.

It's the same V8, 2UZ. 2005+ 4Runners have VVT-i heads.

Is the starter located the same way on the new 4th generation 4.0L V-6 engine? I surely hope not! I hate knuckle busting just to change starters on many autos made over the last 10-15 years.

What happen to the good ole days. Jack up the auto, crawl underneath, remove a short and long bolt, and then catch the starter before it hits you in the face. The skin stayed on your knuckles and not on the auto's tight, jagged metal points.
