starter or not

ok been away a good while, my problem is, I am pretty sure solenoid contacts bad, I think, one day just click, 1 click per turn of the key, not click click click, one turn one click, I know the difference, now one day it will start on first turn of key, good for a few days then back to one click, confused one day fine next day no, when I get just the click I still have lights and radio, still contacts?, too old to get under there any more. battery cables good battery three years old, 225,000 miles on the old girl, don't want to put new starter and find out something else not good, any help would be really great. thank fellas

My guess is battery. Head to an Autozone and get your battery tested for free. My battery did weird things when it was going out.

No need to check the battery. It sounds like the contacts. Just a quick Jack up and unbolt the one wore sand it up and you should be good to go.

thanks both of you, I had the battery tested, checked out fine, was thinking more along the lines of starter relay or neutral safety switch, if it was not the "solenoid contacts" which I am leaning towards, any more opinions would be great, thanks again. Mike

Mine had the same symptoms as yours. After changing the contacts and plunger all has been well.

i chased this for a while... tuned out to be relay, but i changed the contacts too, along the way. dont replace the starter, just replace the contacts in side the starter. do a search here for starter contacts replacement or starter rebuild, and it should give you a walk through on doing it. its a fairly easy job just a little difficult to get to. but the parts are like $30 as apposed to $100 for a cheap junk starter and like $300 for a good denso starter.
