Starter short?

First of all thank all of you who posted instructions on starter removal and contacts replacement. I had the worn contacts symptoms and pulled starter and ordered a set of contacts from Orileys. The kit didn't have both contacts I needed but it did have the one going to the battery that was worn. I replaced it, cleaned everything with brake cleaner and put it back in. When I hooked up the battery, no alarm or accessories power and the battery smoked and drained. Any ideas of what I could have done wrong? I disconnected the starter power, recharged the battery and all is fine alarm and accessories back on.I have a 98 2wd.

My WAG would be the bolt on the battery contact is misaligned on the insulator and is touching the starter case. In any case, you have to pull it, bench test it to confirm short is inside, and then do it over again.

Wow I'm an idiot! Your WAG is correct. I got in a hurry trying to get it done before a rain and forgot one of the insulators. Thanks!

And here I am the guy is who is always telling people to troubleshoot the problem instead of asking the internet for random guesses. Silly me! Glad you got it fixed.
