Just thought I'd share my experience. A week ago, I started hearing a very scary grinding noise during the cranking period. It would still start.
However, just a couple days ago on first startup, I heard a bunch of metal bits hitting the shop floor.
Uh-oh.
My heart dropped as I foresaw engine or trans removal to replace the ring gear.
I figured I better pull the starter and inspect everything.
Well, I pulled the starter and breathed a sigh of relief!
The bendix bearing only had two balls left (lol)
It would oscillate like crazy when bench tested.
I moseyed on over to RiteWay electric here in SF. Amazing guys, they've been working with us for years (here at the forklift shop) rebuilding our DC motors, alternators and starters and more.
Anyways, the new starter is a little shorter, but bolted right up and everything was k.
Just wanted to share, the contacts in these starters aren't the only thing that can go bad! This was the original starter with 237k miles on it.
