Starting Problem

I've got an intermittant starting problem on my 1988 T4R. 4cyl, 5spd, weekend use only. Truck has new battery. Occasionally when starting I would simply hear a "click". It seemed to come from the starter. After asking around a little, I replaced the starter with a Toyota factory rebuild. Problem seemed to go away, then started again. Now I seem to hear a click ...and it sounds like its coming from the passenger side kick panel....down near the blower fan. I'm guessing theres a relay or something there that is bad, and/or an issue with the clutch/starter bypass switch. Anyone come accross this problem before? Any Ideas or recommendations? Thanks!

Probably the solenoid, I would replace that, or hit it a few times (lightly) with a hammer, it may just be sticking.

The Neutral Start switch on the clutch pedal energizes a relay, which may be the click you hear.

If it's not the starter, it may be a problem many of the 80's trucks develop (I had it on an 83 4WD and an 84 2WD), and the most common fix (cause it's the easiest) is to wire a push button switch to the starter solenoid.

I have the same problem with my 85runner. A tap with the hammer usualy does it, but it scares the heck out of me when I am deep in the desert with no one around for 60 or 70 miles. I have an automatic and I have to neutral start switch bypassed so it will start in gear. could that be contributing?

If you're tapping on the starter, it's most likely the starter/solenoid that's bad. Maybe the connection to the solenoid.

Had the same exact bullshit ghost in my 90'
Ask them to install a neutral safety bypass, its most likely the Relay "Wire" has gone bad? Mine never started once it reached operating temp, becuase the wire would get hot, and lose conductivity. So considerate this. Its also a popular problem with 4runners.
