Starting questions for a 99

Hey guys!

I have a question about my runner at start up. Seems like when I go to start her up after running the truck it takes a few turns to get it running. Batt is good and new and plugs have been changed. I want to get it to start like it was new and not have to sit there and turn the key at least twice before she starts. It has 129k miles on it and wanted to know what I can do to achive first turn starts. It starts the fine when cold and first start of the day. But after its been ran it take a few turns to get her on. What would you suggest I do?

Thanks guys!

No, that is not normal.
Look into the cold start injector, may be a bit dirty.

Could also be an injector cracking under heat causing the fuel system to de-pressurize. The long start could be the time the fuel pump needs to get the system back to normal.

There are a few threads around the web about this.

4runners don't have a cold start injector.

Mine does it, too. It is not fuel related. The ECM doesn't send ignition signal for a few seconds after the key is turned to the starting position.

I Stand corrected on the CSI. I forgot we were past 1996 :-)

Perhaps yours is not fuel related, but it is a rather common problem. When there is more than one possibility, telling him his problem is one thing, because yours does it, is a bit misleading.

Jeeper, upon starting when warm, is there more black smoke coming out of the exhaust than normal? That Is a pretty good sign of a leaky injector.

I had the same issue on my 2000. I took it to the dealer and they said it was the starter contacts. A pretty common problem. I had about 140,000 miles at the time so I was happy they lasted that long.

I had them replace the contacts and it fixed the problem.

Wilson- No smoke upon start up.

Schoeney- I had a hunch that it might be the contacts on the starter. Just wanted to see what everyone else thought and that maybe there is something else I can troubleshoot on before I replace the contacts. Read about it here.

Singtoe- you dont think it would be the fuel related? why is that? I thought maybe the fuel filter might not be getting enough fuel to turn on one shot.

Its only on a warm start, after I have ran the runner. On a cold start its fine.

This isn't making much sense. Is it turning over? If it is, it's not starter contacts. It would have to be a fuel/spark condition.

Ours takes a while to fire. Starter (and it's contacts) work fine. Turns over the engine very nicely. Problem is it must turn it over a while before the engine fires. It's always that way hot or cold. Not like my old Pontiac. That thing would fire before one revolution. You only needed to barely hit the key and vroom!

With the fuel filter it would be hard for cold and warm starts, I would imagine.

I am still suspect of a vaporlock problem.

I started a thread about this same problem just a few days ago. After replacing fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, cleaning throttle body, and cleaning Maf sensor I'm still having a slightly slower start than what I think is normal. Seems it improved for a little while shortly after all these parts were replaced.

It was suggested to me to check my fuel pressure but I'm not sure thats the problem.

I have already replaced my starter contacts which was a totally different kind of problem. I would turn the key and there was no sound so to OP if your getting no noise when turning your key then it's more than likely your starter contacts.

Cj80- it makes a noise every time I start it. So thats why I dont suspect the starter contact

BTO- Yes its turning over just after a few turns, I'm guessing its normal. It also does it on my friends 00 runner and I can live with it, but I just want it like your old pontiac or maybe close to it.

Wilson- What/how can I check for vapor lock problems? what should I check/diagnose?

All you have to do is unplug one spark plug lead, install a spark plug in it, ground the base to the engine and try starting it up. (You need to observing the spark plug while someone else is starting the car from the inside). You will notice no spark and then spark and then the engine is running.

You can chk for residual fuel pressure easily. Just break open one of the banyo fittings on the fuel rail. IF gas just drizzles out, some thing is wrong, if gas sprays out, everything is ok.

Vapor lock wouldn't happen on our trucks unless the truck was on fire.

Any Vapors that are created in the fuel system would quickly be pushed through and recycled back into the tank.

Does it sound like these when you start it up or Does it take more turns before it fires up?

It fires up like that, but sometimes it takes a few turns on the key before it fires up after it has been warm. I just started her up first time today and fired up on first time no problem. I will try to make a video and post it of what Im talking about.

I've also been having this issue recently. I was going to go with new plugs/wires soon to see if that helps. It seems like each day it gets a little worse.

Many people have the same problem and the answer is that the ECM does not kick out power to the ignition system at the time of first starting.

I thought it was my Chipped key causing the problems but this happens to those who have just a plain key....

Whats the solution? New ECM?
I guess what I really want to know is it causing any damage. I can live with the slow start even though its annoying as hell.

Mine takes 2-3 times as long to start as the you tube videos.
