Startup Issue?

Hey guys! So most of the time when I go to startup my 98 4runner if I quickly put the key in the ignition and turn it quickly it just makes this electronic noise but it does not start. If I let the key in for about a second or two and I turn it, it starts great. This USUALLY is only on first startup in the day (morning). What is that??? Do I need to get something fixed or is that some electric braking thing? Thanks!

Just a lose battery terminal can cause this, ive seen it happen with my truck. It could also be an issue with the ignition, maybe you need to just slow down a bit. LOL.

LOL maybe so. I'll have to take a video of it to show but every time I go out to record it, it does not make the noise haha.

I wouldn't worry about it too much unless it's not able to start at all. I also would suspect a wiring issue, some wire is probably damaged and has too much resistance.

You can rule out pretty much any fuel/spark issue though since it doesn't even turn over.

I just had the same thing happen! It started off occasional and then more and more. Replaced the Terminals and still did it.
Starter was bad! If you do end up having to to relace your starter dont listen when they say you have to take the exhaust off.

My runner is doing the same thing. Sometimes it takes two or three turns of the key to get it to start. When it does start, it starts normally. I am thinking the starter contacts need to be replaced, so I will probably order a rebuild kit and redo the OEM starter this weekend.

Is it more likely to happen if you leave the A/C or the headlights on? If so, startup current for these items may be dropping available starting amps below what is needed to engage the solenoid. Could be a weak battery or a loose connection somewhere. Cleaning and tightening your battery cables and major grounds might help, as well as a load test on the battery.

Yeah if you just take your passenger tire off and unbolt your brake lines. It takes the right angle of the dangle but it will some out the hole between your frame and body.

Don't deep six a factory Denso alt. for some reman or aftermarket piece of junk, when all you probably need is new contacts. Search "starter contacts" for plenty of DIY's. Amazon and the dealer have the parts, among many others.

The factory Denso will outlive the truck if treated right. Remans/aftermarket die young. I'd still check my cables and load test the battery first. I love cheap, easy fixes.

Agreed and dont think a denso autoparts store is the same as a denso OEM.

TheDurk, I agree. I kept my core for that reason. But i didnt have the patience. I swapped it and just tie strapped my lines out of the way for when i do fix it.
