Startup procedure for new 22re head

What should I do for the first startup or turnover for my 22re '86 4runner (non turbo)

Since the fuel rail is empty of fuel and injectors are dry etc.

Should I turn it over without starting it a few times? How should I run it, idle it etc since I got a new head, valves, camshaft etc... such as break in period etc.... any information is very helpful! thanks

When I filled the crankcase with oil I did it with the valve cover off and poured all 5 quarts over the cam to lube it really good but that was the only precaution I took. I take it you set the valves cold to .007/.011 or close to that right?

Assuming you have the timing pretty close the motor should fire pretty quickly. I'd be sure to follow the break in procedure for the new cam from the manufacturer but other than that there really isn't much of a special procedure or anything...

yes I did the same with pouring oil over cam etc..

new problem. It runs rough idle... when I attempt to set the correct timing. Its to the left of the timing marks by like 1.5 inches.. Once I start to rotate the distributer to set timing, towards 5 degrees it starts to slow down.

Also, I had a blown head gasket, but there is still steam coming out of exhaust and water/steam around headers area coming up... And water drops slowly dripping off tranny on bottom. Do I have a leak? I didnt have a water leak ever before blown head gasket... Did I crack the block somewhere? Any input? Thanks :)

Forgot... Technically speaking, why do we need a break in period for say a new cam shaft? whats the difference? I understand break in period for pistons sorta...but why camshaft?
