Okay.......I have a question that someone hopefully knows the answer to:

If I have my vehicle registered in another state (TN) but I live in NE, which state laws does my vehicle fall under?


I would assume its where is is registered but after searching I haven't found anything concrete.

Well it's a double edged sword.

If your vehicle is registered in another state... The rules like tent, license plate, fender flares, off road lights, etc, etc.. Apply to the state that's on your plate.

On the other hand, if your drivers license or permanent residence is different of that than where your vehicle is registered... Most states have a deadline that you must meet (usually 30-90 days) to change over everything.

Usually the only exception to this is active duty military. They still pay state taxes for their state of residence, even though they reside in another.. Same thing with plates and license.. Can have your vehicle registered in the state you live in, and hold a license from your original state of residence... And vise versa.

So if it can be proven that you have lived there for over 30 days, and you still havent swapped everything, then a ticket will probably stand because you should have had their plates anyways.

I guess I should have stated that I am in the military......and I have a VA license........I really need to find one place!

So it seems that as long as I am following the TN I should be fine? I might have to print them out and leave them with my registration just in case.....

Yep, some cops are dicks or just ignorant.. But you follow TN laws for your vehicle.

Shop around first.

Im a NC resident, live in CA for now.. And as bad as it hurts me to have CA tags on my truck, I'm saving soo much money.

I only pay CA $80 a year being a non resident.

If I were to register my vehicles in NC, it would be cost of inspection and registration + property tax each year... Usually around $420.

For example, if your car is registered in TN, you must meet the registration requirements only for TN, not VA. If TN says you can have 5% tint, and VA say you can have 20%, the cops can by in all rights give you a ticket. It's a big double edged sword, and nobodt can get over. The only exemptions the military gets is changing tags and licenses in the different states.

You typically won't get a tint ticket. There are plenty of people here with illegal tint for Texas but they have other state plates. Cops may pull you over for the tint itself to see if there's a ticketable offense but they probably won't give a ticket for just that unless they want to be complete jerks.

Well I say all that but there is this one county in Texas outside of Killeen that, if you have a dual wheel rear axle, you have to have mud flaps that are no more than 3" from the ground or else they'll cite you. That's some BS

When I was in, one was expected to have the plates of either their home state or the state they were stationed in. If you give your pass office a call, I expect that they would be helpful.

When I was in over at Ft. Hood no one had Texas plates. Never was an issue. If you're near a military base I wouldn't expect the cops to hassle you at all. They see it everyday and know what's going on. There were cars that would never pass a Texas inspection that were still legal because they were registed in a Dakota or something.

This isn't as cut and dry as you'd think. I got a ticket while traveling through Virginia for having illegal tint. And the state trooper specifically told me since I had a Florida plate, I had to meet Florida law even while in Virginia. So after measuring my window tint, 11% at the time, he went back to the cruiser and looked up Florida tint laws. 28%. So he wrote me a ticket, in Virginia, for a violation of Florida law.

Pretty much what it comes down to, is cops do what they want. And he knew I wasn't going to travel back to Virginia to fight it so that was the end of that.

That was just based on the conversation that I had with the cops in NV, and the cops in NC. The cops in NC will tell you that they can ticket you for being outside of NC state law, but they find it absurd and won't do it if you have out of state plates. The same thing in NV, except they don't care, and they will give you a ticket. The messed up thing is, you can't pay the ticket in NV. They demand you fix it. Conversely, you can't get a cop to sign the ticket in another state if their state won't allow it. It was a nightmare for me. Thats just my experience with it though.
