In 1968 the U.S. minimum wage was $1.60/hr. If it had kept up with inflation, income growth, etc it would be $21.60/hr today, but it's $7.25.

Something to think about.

It should never have been that high in '68.

(BTW, when it was first suggested in the early 1900s it was ruled unconstitutional... but that's a different debate)

In the 30's it was 25 cents/hour, or roughly $4/hour in today's value. It became bloated to the 1.60 by the 60's (which is more like $10 in today's value).

But you haven't answered my question. Where do you think that extra money comes from?

Do you think minimum wage was intended for long term employment and to support a family?

Also you do realize that income and inflation drive each other, right?

Yes I understand the difference between minimum wage and a living wage, thanks.

Where does the extra money come from? I don't think there is a definitive answer. I assume you would argue it comes out out of the bottom line of Joe Small Business Owner who pay their employees minimum wage (and in exchange get minimum quality work mind you.)

I might argue the increased wages would come from giant corporations who's corporate tax breaks have allowed their success on the backs of the minimum wage workers. But hey, get an education right? Oops - then you're drowning in student loan debt and have no ability to even consider bankruptcy while corporations who poison drinking water of 300k people can. Sorry, that's another topic.

Listen, I understand minimum wage laws aren't ideal and harmful in some cases but what exactly do you propose? Letting the free market figure it out, and you think we have an illegal immigration problem now? Pff! There won't be a dose of Frontline Plus big enough to shake the fleas out of America then. Catch-22.

It doesn't come from the bottom line, I can promise you that. Business owners aren't taking the hits... its us. We ultimately end up paying for it via higher prices. So sure, pay a burger flipper $10/hour and when he takes a lunch break, he'll pay $7 for that combo that cost him $4 before his "raise." And the next time your family goes in there, you'll pay those higher prices too. Then consider the manager that was already making $10/hour. Now he wants $13 because he deserves more than the burger flipper, right?

Think of wages as similar to the law of conservation of energy. There is no magical creation of energy, just give and take. Similarly, there's no magic stockpile from which wages can just be increased without downstream effects. The answer is new wages. Where are all these jobs America was promised?

Something I've always found odd is the unbridled mouth foaming hatred of the president.

Sure I don't approve of the job he is doing, just like the majority of America. I think he's a shithead who made a bunch of empty promises (just like any other politician, mind you) and I'm glad I voted against him twice but seriously? To be so filled with hatred while conversely thinking another politician is the answer - what's the definition of insanity? Or to claim you can't listen to him without wanting to vomit or have some violent rage? That just seems like some sad ass wasted energy and makes me think theres deeper issues there.

Anywho, how about a fact check of the speech?

^ They're just venting, and frankly I think their frustration is justified. Also, given the discussions flying around here, I doubt anyone honestly believes another politician is the answer at all. Something bigger has to change if we are going to regain momentum here. I think we might start seeing more votes for average Americans running for office rather than career ass kissing politicians.

I'm pretty sure you know why this is happening.

As if an average American can come up with the cash to fund a run for POTUS.

I was referring more to local and state offices, but yeah. Tough to get in the way of that much money. Although it seems more and more evident that the prez is more or less elected as a public face to misdirect what is really going on behind the public scene.

Tell me, what good does it do to raise the minimum wage, while degreasing the value of the dollar?

Come on everybody let's practice our salute!

All hail king obama! :hail:

It's clear you don't understand what this flag means. So let me give you a brief history lesson.

The flag is named after American general and statesman Christopher Gadsden, who designed it in 1775 during the American revolution. It was also used by the Continental Marines as an early motto flag.

As the American Revolution grew, the snake began to see more use as a symbol of the colonies. In 1774, Paul Revere added it to the title of his paper, the Massachusetts Spy, as a snake joined to fight a British dragon.[4] In December 1775, Benjamin Franklin published an essay in the Pennsylvania Journal under the pseudonym American Guesser in which he suggested that the rattlesnake was a good symbol for the American spirit.

Considered one of the first flags of the United States, the flag was later replaced by the current Stars and Stripes (or Old Glory) flag. Since the Revolution, the flag has seen times of reintroduction as a symbol of American patriotism, a symbol of disagreement with government, or a symbol of support for civil liberties.

Beginning in 2009 at Tea Party rallies, the Gadsden Flag has been adopted as a symbol of the American Tea Party movement.

I am a Libertarian. I don't want to tread on anyone's rights. I think gays should be allowed to marry and have the same rights as everyone else. Everyone should be able to practice their religion, even the ones I don't agree with. If a woman wants to have an abortion, that's her business. I don't want the government telling me what I can and can't do.

But please, continue to post cute memes. Oh, you think the president having a Medal of Honor recipient present makes up for the other shit his administration has done to our service members? I'm curious what your opinion will be in 2016 when we get Hilldog rammed down our throats.

The GOP, the Democrats, the Rhinos, and the Tea Party candidates are all the same. They are politicians, and they have their own agendas. But this current administration has pretty much reneged on every single promise made in the campaigns, and our country continues to suffer from it.

I'm well aware of the Gadsden flags history, thanks. I'm also aware how symbolism can change with time.

I'd also bet that 75% of Appalachians who have this bumper sticker on their Ford Festivas have never heard of Gadsden.

Judging by your posts, it's clear you have no idea what you are talking about, and only troll threads. By the way you aren't any good at it.

Take the below image you posted for example: How has he cut the deficit in half again?

It's hopeless "JBecker" you just can't talk reason into the far gone fanatical followers.

You know, I watched on Netflix the show "MITT" and think all who support the current intern president to watch and see what a huge mistake they made by supporting obama. Mitt Romney might not be perfect, few are, but he is honorable, and that is something obama will and can, NEVER be. It's a shame we have so many lost sheeple out there cause Romney would have been so great for our country. Yes, he was flawed but dam, he isn't arrogant, and would never pull the shit the intern prez. Is currently doing.

And for all who disagree, feel free to comment on how dumb I am.

I really need a good laugh!

How has he cut the deficit in half again?

When Obama took office in 2009, he inherited a projected deficit of $1.2 trillion. By the time fiscal year 2009 was finished, the actual deficit turned out to be over $1.4 trillion – the highest in U.S. history. And deficits remained over $1 trillion for the next three fiscal years.
The deficit for fiscal year 2013 (which ended Sept. 30) fell to $680 billion. That’s indeed less than half the 2009 figure.

I'm sorry the facts don't fit your libertarian narrative, speaking of which - good on you for recognizing the broken two party system. While not libertarian myself, you might be proud to know I even voted for Gary Johnson in 2012 so we have something at least two things in common, right?

Just that whole seething hatred of the president thing, I can't get on board with that wasted negative energy.

And please, because you don't agree with my remarks that doesn't make it trolling.

Cheers!

Sorry, but 4 years of over a 1 trillion dollar a year deficit isn't solely an inheritance, very far from it actually. The $831 billion dollar stimulus plan he signed in 2009 doesn't count, right? A major reason for the 2013 deficit falling as much as it did was largely based on sequestration and 2 wars winding down, and basically nothing the president actually did. Not sure if you keep up with it, but the Legislative and Executive branches haven't been able to come to any agreements about a budget in a long time. So what makes you think the president is behind the lower deficit?

I forgot, it's still all Bush's fault.

"It's all Bush's fault."

I love how conservatives cling to the repetition of that excuse as to somehow delegitimize it's truth. Is that to say our current president is some bastion of fiscal responsibility? Hell no, obviously. But to evade and deny the roles Bush played in how currently ****ed we are is to be incredibly naive. We can and should be more reasonable than that.

All hail king obama! :hail:

Obama is a dictator who uses his powers to further his left-wing nazi,socialist,facist,communist,stalin-like,keynesian experiement on the poor American people who were forced to vote for him twice because he sent blacks to polling places to intimidate poor white voters....... how un-americannnnn ACORNNNNN!BENGHAZIIII!BIRTH CERTIFICATE!!!!!!BAILOUTS!!!!!!!!!!!

You literally blamed the previous administration for the deficit growth during Obama's first term a few posts ago. 4 years? Yeah it doesn't work that way.
