Stealership vs rear brakes

Ok....I'll probably get yelled at for going to the stealer anyway but here goes:

Went to get the usual 1)oil/filter.....and occasional 2)"lube drive shaft, retorque drive shaft bolt" done ...... half way through the service advisor comes out and tells me the rear brake pads need replacing ("they're at 2mm...should be 13mm)
I tell him the rear pads were replaced for the very first time at 45000 miles, 15 months ago......and now at 60000 they need to be replaced again ???!!!! I was like common sense would say 90000 miles for the rear brake pads since they went the first time at 45000.... I asked him if they replaced the rear brake pads the first time with cardboard???? WTF ??? My driving habits haven't changed.
Anyone else experience this ???? I know they're thieves.....and wait, why the F were they looking at my brakes when I'm asked for only the 2 items above to b done???

Did the quality of rear OEM brake pads go downhill then? I mean how the heck did these brakes get replaced the first time at 45k miles and now they're are looking to replace them again after only 15k more???
Something isn't right

Did you look with your own eyes?
 
Surprised the rear would wear out before the front and the second set may have been cheapies, not OEM.

My buddy was a mechanic at a service center and they always pulled on wheel off the front and back to check brakes. Not sure if it was a good safety move or looking for more work.

OK do you know what the first thing these service writers look at? YOU. They go through their "How much can I sucker this sucker" list. Senior? Young? Male? Female? Senior and female? Check! proceed to section "talk them into everything you can"

These service writers are essentially the same dirtbags roaming around the lots trying to sell cars. Believe me there are lots of suckers out there.
 
The BMW dealer tried to tell my wife she needed new brakes and filters on her car two weeks after we replaced them. She looked at the adviser and said she isn't an idiot and to just change the oil and get her out of there as quickly as possible so she didn't have to deal with a sleazeball anymore. Adviser also didn't know that the GM of the dealership is a friend of ours, he wasn't there much longer once we told him what happened.

I took a quick look and the clip thing that shows how much pad is left had a nice gap.....but 15k miles and they're done????? I'm hoping this dealer (Huntington Toyota) isn't using aftermarket pads instead of their own

I'm not following what you looked at - what gap are you talking about? The space between the pad and rotor? That is not how you measure pad material. You said they said it had 2mm left. Did you see a brake pad with just 2mm left of material?

An older friend of mine is a senior cardiologist, been doing heart surgery for 30 years.

Anyways, sometimes 'suckers' are not stupid; they're smart people like a cardiologist, but simply ignorant to the world of auto mechanics and maintenance, there's nothing wrong with that.

He told me he's going Tesla on his next car because Benz dealership is always trying to upsell him on shit when he goes in for an oil change. He always pays whatever they ask because... he doesn't have the knowledge (or time to gain that knowledge) to argue. How does he know if the Benz does or doesn't need XYZ? He knows enough to feel that he's being taken advantage of, and nothing more.

Anyway my point is, you're absolutely right. These advisers and dealers are ****ing hawks always eyeing easy prey.

I'm mechanically savvy
I know cars ..... just don't want to turn wrenches or crawl under my truck anymore
That being said I'm not a sucker.....or else I wouldn't have mentioned this to you guys or this service adviser....I keep all the maintenance records on my vehicle
I haven't measured the pad material that's left but I know what's left by looking at the sensor/ clip that's on the pad itself (gonna post a pic).... I'm thinking these guys didn't use OEM...... at a Toyota dealership no less
They should be ashamed of themselves
 
Not sure if it applies to Toyota, but GM uses the thickness of the metal plate and pad to determine change time. Recommended to change if the pad is the same or less than the backing plate. Also they use wear sensors that scrape on the rotor when it's change time. Just look for clearance of the small metal tab to the rotor. It makes a good noise when it contacts the rotor.

All pads are aftermarket, even Toyota pads from the dealer. Toyota doesn't sell the exact same pads used at the factory, they are rebranded from whoever makes them for Toyota. Just like their oil, filters, batteries, most everything like that. I would have walked directly into the shop and said show me. Bet the shit their pants
 
We all want to know how much pad is remaining before the rotor makes contact with the clip sensor. There is no way that the stock oem rears can wear out at 15k. You can technically baby them from new to 100k if you tried.

Not sure why you are getting so defensive. If you are mechanically savvy and you know cars and you saw what you saw, then change the pads. If you feel there is another issue with your rear brakes eating up brake pads maybe you should raise the issue and have them check your entire brake system.
 
Don't mean to insult but do you know for sure the rear breaks were done at 45000. Maybe that's where you got ripped and now you need rear brakes at 60000. Just spit balling here
