Hello everyone, I was a potential 4runner buyer up until today. I made what I thought was a pretty good deal on an 05 v8 SR5 last night, it was kinda late so it had to go through there shop this morning. Sales dud calls me this morning and says "bad news"... He says there is a recall on the truck and they cant sell it to me. He couldn't tell me what the recall was so I had to call the manager. It ended up being an airbag recall and he told me there is no fix. The whole deal seems kinda fishy to me. I'm pretty disgusted because it was a nice clean rig...Anyway, back to the drawing board.

I definitely wouldn't wipe T4R off the board just yet. That's much more a dealership issue than a 4Runner issue. I'm not sure specifically about the airbag recall but the 4Runners have earned their reputation. Keep searching, even search a little further away from you. It can be a little bit of a hassle but it opens up the door to so many more possibilities. Good Luck in your search!

Call Toyota head office with your concerns, get the VIN and check for recalls yourself.

My son has an '05 LE and he received the recall notice earlier this week. It is for the side curtain airbags. If you start the truck and put it in gear before 5 seconds there is possibility of the bags going off. There is no fix yet, but the work around is to allow the truck to idle in park for at least 5 seconds upon start up.

Yep that's the one. I wish they would have figured all that out before I wasted all my time down there wheel'n and deal'n. I got them down to 10,300 otd. Seemed like a good deal to me.

The recall they are referring to is the G1C, it's in interim stage which means that there is no fix for it at the moment. When a fix is ready it will become "G0C" indicating an active recall with a repair procedure. This is a section from the G1C dealer letter:

Pre-Owned Vehicles in Dealer Inventory
Toyota generally requests that dealers do not deliver of any pre-owned vehicles in dealer inventory that are covered
by a Safety Recall unless the defect has been remedied. In this case, delivery of pre-owned vehicle is acceptable with
the disclosure to the customer that the vehicle is involved in this Safety Recall and that the remedy is currently being
prepared by Toyota.

Also, Toyota suggests that dealers inform the customer that this specific condition only
has the potential to occur shortly after vehicle startup and WILL NOT occur if the vehicle
is idled for 6 seconds following vehicle startup before driving. One way to judge when it
is best to proceed to avoid this condition is to observe and wait for the SRS warning light
to turn off. (NOTE: If the SRS warning light remains on or flashes, bring your vehicle to
SRS Warning Light your local authorized Toyota dealer for diagnosis.)

Also, as a reminder, Toyota Certified Used Vehicle (TCUV) policy prohibits the certification of any vehicle with an
outstanding Special Service Campaign or Safety Recall. Thus, no affected units should be sold or delivered as a
TCUV until the Safety Recall has been completed on that vehicle.

So in other words this has nothing to do with the dealership, making it a little unfair to label them a "stealership".

They stole my time :) It doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me. I wish they'd just let me buy the thing. I'll bring it back in when they figure out the remedy.

An air bag going off when it shouldn't is definitely a big deal. The dealer did not waste your time.

I can understand your disappointment but please keep in mind they are running a business that pretty much requires taking your safety above all other considerations even when you're willing to forgo it. You will find your perfect truck.

They've figured out you're a whiny crybaby and don't want you as a customer.

Given the explaination behind them not going through with this deal, no corporate lawyer would sign off on the deal as it opens them up to possibily a multi-million dollar lawsuit if people get hurt.

Did you come here just to bash the dealership? They didn't steal your time. Not saying your time isn't valuable, everybody's is. But they follwed standard operating procedures regarding recalls. If a recall comes out, every car on the lot that is effected has to have it performed before it can be sold. This includes used cars. Just because a customer would rather bring it back later doesn't guarantee that they would and the car becomes a liability for them and a potential danger for the customer.

If you really want that truck, stay in touch with them and make they know you still want it. Once the recall is complete I'm sure they'd be more than happy to sell it to you. It's not going anywhere because as I stated previously, they can't move that vehicle from their inventory until the recall is complete.

I hope there is a fix soon, or new production vehicles are not included. I've been waiting for mine for over a month now and it's scheduled to be at the dealership this Friday.

I hope I can take delivery! :wow::ybrick:

Thanks Gator. I went back and read the posts. I missed that part.

I'm an idiot.
No problem - I once had a fortune cookie that said: "None of us know what all of us know" (or something to that effect) :D Hopefully you'll get your T4R soon!

When recalls come down...

The affected vehicles are put on Stop Sale. The dealerships have zero control over this, and it's immediate. They do, however, have the liability if they ignore the directive.
