Steel winter rims and torque

I installed winted steel whells in a tire shop. They said that I need to retorque wheels after 100 km as those are brand new rims. And they said that the torque should be 98 ft.lb. I investigated the subject and retorque them to 80 ft.lb. Did I do the right thing? Any input is highly appreciated. Thank you.

Hey colombo,

When I recently swapped out wheels at a local tire shop, they too included a reminder for re-torque after 100 km. More of a safety or liability issue on their part. I have my own torque wrench, so I checked them on my own about a week later.

From my experience, tire shops do like to torque the lug nuts higher than is called for by the manufacturer's torque specs. My FSM calls for 83 ft-lbs on the lug nuts, so you are in the ball park.

Thank you Bossman. I used to tighten sh*t out of the bolts (with supplied lug wrench) on all my previous vehicles. So 80 ft.lb. just feels a little not tight enough.

I used to hate when my Toyota dealership worked on my T4R (e.g., brake work or rotated the tires) and would use an impact gun to tighten the wheels. Then when I went to do something involving taking the wheels off I had a heck of a time breaking the lug nuts free. I have now specified to them that anything involving my wheels coming off/on must be tightened by hand and torqued.
