Steering Angle C1433 Code after new Spiral Cable Install

Hey folks,

So the other day we installed a new spiral cable in our 2014 4Runner to fix an inoperable horn. The good news is that the horn now works, the bad news is that we have Traction Control, Multi-Terrain, and Steering Angle lights on the dash.

Blue Driver says we have a C1433 code... or steering angle fault.

We've confirmed all connections are tight.
We've ensured the steering wheel is installed back to it's previous location.
We've attempted to perform a zero point calibration but it will not go into test mode.
We've disconnected the battery, tried the old unit, etc. but the faults refuse to go away (Bluedriver can't remove them either).

Looking for any ideas before we're forced to go to the dealer for help... thanks!

Without more details on how you tried to enter the Zero Point reset, we're limited to guessing what could have gone wrong.
Just to make sure you have the correct procedure I'll attach the relevant pages from the FSM.

!! note: the pictures of the DLC in the manual all show a flipped orientation of the way the connector actually sits in the truck. Pay attention to the wide edge when identifying pins 4 and 12 !!

The codes cannot be cleared without performing the clear -- calibrate. How it is aware that the angle sensor has been changed is a mystery to me, but it knows.

Since both the old and new module are giving you the same trouble I would assume the new one is fine. I'll also assume that the module is an aftermarket one since the OEM one is $$$$$$$$. If that is true I'd bet that a dealer may not be willing to do the computer work with a non-OE module in today's hyper-liability environment.

You've got all the other gadgets, but you need a copy of Techstream (Amazon - Ebay) and a decent mini VCI to get to all the obscure PIDs. With techstream you can monitor live data from the angle sensor to ensure that it is functioning. Plus clearing and calibration is software based instead of jumper wire. The software is antique compared to some of the consumer Apps but it's the only game in town for complete access. Windows only, 64bit OS gives some people trouble with the J2534 drivers (a lot seem to be not Microsoft certified so windows Zeros out the registry for it) It's compiled for Win7 32. It will run on any it just takes some bit fiddling sometimes.

We performed the zero calibration process as defined by the manual. It would never go into the calibration mode.

We were forced to take it to the dealership since we ran short on time for travel west and nothing we tried was working. After 9.5 hours they were finally able to determine the sensor had zero signal output. Since it was a Toyota part ($752) they honored the parts warranty and ended up not charging me a dime since I sat there for so long while they consulted back and forth with the engineers at Toyota.
It was an almost unbelievable process to get it figured out. Honestly, we're quite blown away they didn't charge us to fix it!

What the tech shared was that those sensors are a one-shot deal. Install it just 1° off and it's toast, chuck it out the door. Other articles I've seen show you can disassemble the unit, manipulate a jumper on the board, clear the position it started with, solder the jumper back into place, then reinstall. Far beyond my capabilities or even the dealerships abilities. This is one part Toyota could have designed better and allowed it to be recalibrated.

My takeaway... Don't ever screw with your spiral cable or steering sensor on a 5th gen. Let the dealer do it and take the hit if the install goes wrong. This was hard one to swallow since I do all my own work.

Why didn't I go with the eBay knock-off? Because it controls the airbag... And I didn't want to rely on a cheap copy for that. But hindsight is 20/20 and knowing what I know now after 9.5 hours sitting at a dealership... I would have given the eBay model a try!

This simple effort to fix a horn got way out of hand fast. Still unclear whether it was a bad unit or bad initial install... But at this point I'm just glad it's freaking over and we're on the road again.
 
I am in the exact situation! I replaced the clock spring because the horn didn't work and now I have the skid control light and power steering light illuminated permanently. I tried a Zero Calibration using TechStream to no avail. I have codes C1231 and C1433. I just ordered an OEM Steering Angle Sensor. What exactly did they replace at the dealer? I am hoping I can just pop on the new SAS and be done.
