Steering Rack Guide

Hi Everyone,

I am on the path to eliminate at least substantially reduce the crazy steering wheel shake I am experiencing when driving over a rocky trail. Steering is rock solid on normal roads.

So far, I've narrowed it down to two culprits:

1. steering rack bushings - which are on the way
2. steering rack guide - which may or may not be bad, see below

My question for the gurus is two fold:

1. does this amount of play (about 1-1.5mm) indicate that the steering guide needs to be replaced?

2. i've seen people replacing the original design steering guide (45504-35010) with a newer type (45504-35031).

If I do that, do I also need to replace the spring and cap?

Bushings do wear out but I don't think they're the cause of the rattle when roading over rough roads, its more likely the slip joint design Toyo put in for safety during a severe accident.

If OP has a 96 he likely has no slip joint. It seems that was put in mid 97. My 96 has a solid skinny shaft rather than the fat 2 piece.

When I changed my guide it makes a lot of difference in tightening up movement at the drivers end of the steering rack. I changed all the pieces but I’m not sure all were needed. I’m sure you can reuse the spring and locknut but not sure about the cap. You’ll have to research or just try and see what happens. Maybe someone else will chime in.

About yours needing replacing, if you have the old design the new design is an improvement. It would be money well spent.
