steering vibration shake HELP!!

Need help!!! Just purchased a 2011 4runner SR5 and I installed new Nitto 420s 285/45/22 tires with MKW wheels 22x9.5. According to the tire shop, the wheels required a 1/4 inch spacer because of the offset (25 offset)...I have vibration in my seats and my steering wheel shakes alot between 45-65. I had all 4 balanced...twice and rotated the backs to the front...Any suggestions? Could the spacer be causing it? Should the alignment be checked? Is the spacer causing the rim to not be hubcentric anymore? Love the look of the car now, but its disgusting everytime we drive it. Thanks in advance!!

I don't know the specifics of your rim and spacer setup, so I can't speak to that, but at the bare minimum you need to get your wheels balanced on a road force balancing machine. Not all shops have one, and if yours doesn't, they shouldn't be installing tires that large/heavy.

I let my installer drive my 4Runner to a sister shop to use their road force balancing machine, and it made a world of difference - and I only had a very slight shake at ~50mph.

I'm guessing the 5th gen uses lug centric nuts (like most, if not all Toyotas) so it's probably not that, unless they were changed out with the new wheels.

There are a lot of debates on these forums, especially with larger off road wheels/tires about the method of balancing (road force balance). Lots of things can cause vibrations, see here .

Just a start, but I'd take it back to the shop and have them correct it. I'm sure the work is warranted.

I agree with you as far as getting them road forced balanced. But, they dont have one, they said they are working on getting one. The more and more I think about it I'm tempted to take out the 1/4 spacer to see if it helps...If that spacer is in place...there isnt much lip for the wheel to rest on ...They should have ordered the corect size offset wheel. The only thing that has me confused is I have 420s on my tundra in 24's and it has a slight steering wheel shake..not bad at all...but I dont have any spacers...I think the road force will cure that...

they did install new lugs...not sure what kind...supposedly ones that catch more threads.

Are your rims hub centric or lug centric? I hav'nt seen any aftermarket wheels that are hub centric. They are all lug centric,as yours are probably too, and have to be balanced as such even though the 4Runners came with hub centric wheels.

Wow , 25mm offset with a 9 1/2 rim comes out to a 6.25" backspace.Even with a 1/4" spacer makes it 6" compared to stock of 4.5".That pushes the wheel in an inch and a half compared to stock. Have you even tried extending your front suspension to see if it hits on your Upper Control Arm or to see what the clearance is.

As you probably already know,those rims were designed for Chevies and GM's as they have the same bolt pattern but 1" plus more backspace then 4runners and a smaller bore.
Trying to make a square peg fit into a round hole isn't easy unless you have a big enough hammer!

Take those 1/4" wheel spacers OFF immediately! They are dangerous.

Your wheel offset is not designed for your Toyota as mentioned.

The wheel studs are shorter on the front than the rear, and adding a 1/4" spacer is making your lugs not engage far enough onto the stud. Danger!

I would suspect it's the spacers. A safer way to go is to use wheel "adapters", from spidertrax, or all pro off road...Not "spacers". Or get the proper offset wheel...

The wheels were drilled for the large hub bore...106mm...I think these wheels are hubcentric, same as kmc slides. Looking at the install... The spacer is not allowing it to go on the hub as much... If they would hav ordered the 18 offset I would not need the spacer .

An aftermarket hub centric wheel? I'd have to see this.
If the lug nuts holding the wheels on are conical or tapered then they are lug centric as they determine the centering of the wheel.Hub centric wheel lug nuts are flat and just hold the wheel on as the hub and bore center it.

I just had a shop think my new wheels needed balancing for hub centric too since the truck was. Barely drivable over 50mph and took it back to Discount tire,they were super busy the first time I tried there,and they re balanced to perfection. Said Hamm's had to have had the hub centric adapter on instead of the lug centric one for balancing as they were way off.

Only one guy imports them into the states by the pallet load every couple of months that I know of. I'll be sure to pm you when he gets more in as I'm looking for a 5th one to use as a spare and in case I fack one of mine up.:naughty:

Just an update...removed the spacers and its still shaking/vibrating alot...Waiting to hear back from MKW...They'll probably send out a new set of wheels with the correct offset...Thanks for the help so far!

Got my 5th Countersteer on with a km2! Search the taco forums and fj forums, I found a guy looking to do the same thing, sold me the wheel for $100, couldn't pass that up!

Got an update...wheels and tires checked out good on road force balance...stuck the wheels on a 06 tundra and they drover perfect all the way thru 70 mph...no shaking at all...but when they were on the 4runner...it shook look the belts were seperating...the shop is telling us the wheels are too heavy..but I see people on here with bigger tires...Any ideas? Thanks, lance
