Steering Wheel controls with new Radio?

I was considering getting a new radio for my 4runner. But, is there something special needed, or will the buttons work like normal if I hook up a new radio to it?

more than likely you will need an adapter ... but they seem to be readily available ... I'm getting ready to install a JVC HU in my '08 and I bought the adapter to make the steering wheel controls work from Crutchfield

the easiest one to use IMO is the axxess aswc..it auto detects our vehicle and there are only a few wires to splice

I can vouch for this. I helped a buddy install one with the PAC adapter, it was a real pain. I used the Metra (Axxess) ASWC and it was much easier, instructions were way better as well.

I got an Alpine HU in 07 in my T4R and it took the Tweeter guy an hour to make the steering wheel controls work with the HU. Glad to hear there are better options out there. My next unit will be able to read my iPod without any wires like my wife's 2011 Sienna can.
