Steering wheel options

Wrong sir.

The way I read it, is that it must always be retained in the vehicle and when sold it must be in good working order, to me that says if you remove it, it's illegal.

.

It's not illegal to remove it, it's illegal to SELL it with it removed. These laws were put on the books because shady dealers were repairing wrecked cars and selling them with dummy airbags in them. Then when someone would get into a crash the bags they thought were going to protect them didn't work. There's nothing illegal about removing them for your own person use, you just have to put them back if you're going to sell it.

So my steering wheel has finally started Tairing and I hate it! so I need a new steering wheel! Absolutely no covers! I have seen the Lexus wheel and a factory replacement but I was kinda thinking of doing some kind of a free market set up. Anyone on here have any insight on my options?

You could do what I did and try and find a urethane steering wheel from a junk yard. I believe the 4 cylinder 3rd gens came with them. I got lucky and found one in almost perfect condition for $60 bucks. You never have to worry about it peeling or cracking like the leather ones. Bolts right up too.

EDIT: I did some more digging and found the answer! It looks like the Rav4/IS300/Corolla/Supra Steering Wheels will all swap over. In a lot of cases the airbag is PnP too. The only thing that needs some work is the cruise control...

Has anyone adapted a Rav4 Steering Wheel? I parked next to one this morning and noticed how good they looked! They are very sporty and remind me of the Lexus IS300 Steering Wheels (I have owned 3 IS300's)... I know they can come with an airbag, but have no knowledge of how that would/could work!

reviving old thread

have not been on in a wile with any updates but i did go to revline and had them redo my steering wheel!

this is what it looked like and drove me nutz!

and this is what it looks like now!

A few weeks ago I was at the junk yard and found a steering wheel out of a 2000 Sienna mini van. While its not the black "leather" wrapped wheel it had before, I wont have to worry about this one coming apart and wearing through like the stock one did. It fit perfect, the air bag plugged right in, and the color matches the rest of my tan interior. Only mod I had to do was to swap over the cruise control stalk from the 4runner wheel.
