Steering Wheel Play

Hey guys, just wondering if you have experienced play in your steering wheel. Its not suspension related and it occurs when the car is parked or driven. I can grab the wheel move it back and forth. I can hear the noise coming from the steering wheel column.

I read a forum that talked about a bolt under the plastic cone covering the steering shaft that comes loose. I checked and that wasn't the problem.
I just want to get the play tightened up because it causes vibrations in the wheel when going over big bumps.

Check your intermediate steering shaft in the engine compartment, it goes from the rack and pinion and towards the firewall, it also has a small univeral joint on it which could be worn.

Would that affect the clicking noise coming from behind the steering column? The sound play and noise feels like it’s right under my nose.

Noises travel, it could be literally any part of the steering including rack or axle bushings. Get under there, have someone else move the wheel, find the issue, repair as required.

Yup start at the two wheels outside and work your way in.these rigs aren't getting younger and stuff wears out.:redbrick:

The steering column "clack" could be a few things.

I've felt this for a while. Some people solved it by tightening the first bolt where the steering shaft comes through the firewall down by the pedals but it sounds like you checked and this wasn't it. Mine wasnt loose either.

Other people had success with sliding the steering shaft coupler up slightly.

The other fix that people seemed to have a permanent fix was from spot welding the slip connection in the column itself (third thread) to remove the play between those two pieces. Some have shimmed it with thin metal but most gave it spot welded. I have yet to get to this as I don't have a welder or friends with one despite knowing how to weld.
