Steering Wheel Shaking

Hey guys! Sorry It's been so long! Been away for the summer but I'm back so I'll be back on here a lot.

The 6 or so months I've been experiencing some heavy shaking in the wheel at certain speeds. My question is simple. Is this because of the aftermarket wheel spacers I'm using. I'm unsure if the ones I bought are Lug or Hub Centric but if they happen to be lug centric would that cause some shaking? I love the stance of the 1.5" wheel spacer but if its causing this shake I'll gladly go to a Spidertrax 1.25" Hub Centric Wheel spacer.

What are your thoughts?

When was the last time you balanced your tires?

Wheel spacers shouldn't cause vibration as long as they are hubcentric and installed properly. During installation, it helps to clean the hub with a wirebrush and make sure all is tight and tq'ed to spec after the first 50 miles of installing them.

Oh they are balanced and rotated as perfect as my 4R can. I've had my mechanic look at everything and he says everything is tight under there and nothing he can do to fix it.
The thing is: I don't know if they are hub centric or not. If they happen to be lug centric would they cause shaking?
 
Do you have any pics of the spacer? If not, get some and we can tell you if they're hub centric or not. I'd lean more towards it being something other than the spacers, but I could be wrong.

So I dont have any pics, as of yet. But after doing some small research I'm pretty sure my spacers are, in fact, lug centric.

Correct me if I'm wrong. By what I've seen, the lug centric spacers just have bolts coming out of a spacer - thats it. Where the hub centric is designed where it has the bolts coming out and a ring on the spacer it fit into the center ring of the wheel. Its really hard to explain with words but I'm almost 95% sure I have lug centric spacers.

Would this cause the shaking? My mechanic swears (after 2 inspections) that everything is tight in my front. He's even surprised how good it looks coming from an off road truck.

The outboard side of the spacer has a 'lip' to center the rim. Its really hard to explain with words but I'm almost 95% sure I have lug centric spacers. Would this cause the shaking? IMHO yes. There's a few with non-hubcentric spacers and they swear they never have an issue but most seem to need the hubcentric to get a smooth ride. If your rims will take a conically shaped lugnut and you get lugnuts with the correct angle on the face of the nut that may be a choice... I have thought of that a few times when this topic comes up. I don't know if anyone has ever done a lugnut swap.:cheers:

Thanks everyone! Think I might just buy a couple spidertrax and see if that fixes my problem. Thanks!
 
Spidertrax are on their way! I'm feeling pretty optimistic that this is the problem. If not, I'm going to be pretty upset at my mechanic and make him do a much more extensive search of anything that could cause this shaking.

Those aren't hub centric (the silver one isn't, the blue one is), the lip is the dead give away. I opened this thread cuz I had the same problem but only while braking, I figured out that my left front rotor was warped. If the vibration only occurs under braking this could be the cause if the spidertraxx spacers don't fix it.

edit: I also have spidertraxx and at first thought they were the cause, but it's fine now with the spacers since I changed the rotor

Yep! Thats why Im optimistic this will fix the problem. The ones im running are the silver ones and aren't hub centric as the spidertrax ones are. And no this is while driving, not braking.
 
I have the same problem. I have spidertrax and daystar 2.5 front strut spacers. The front tires are balance dead on. 35PSI in all 4 tires. What else could be wrong? This just happened about 1 month after the spacers :shrug:
 
Didn't help. I'm thinking new tires even though they still have atleast 80% life left on them. SUNNY tires. I bet that's the reason :/ Damn cheap-o's putting crappy tires on a 4runner just because their lease is up. :50cal:
