Report: Toyota crash data suggests driver error

NEW YORK – The Department of Transportation has analyzed dozens of black boxes in Toyota vehicles involved in accidents blamed on unintended acceleration, finding the throttles were open and the brakes were not engaged, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

That suggests that drivers of the speeding cars were stepping on the accelerator rather than hitting the brakes. The vehicles investigated came from a sample in which the drivers said they were braking but failed to stop the car before crashing, the newspaper said, citing unnamed sources familiar with the findings......

maybe thats why the "unintended acceleration" and "stuck gas pedals" seemed to happen largely toward older folks. I was wondering if Toyotas weren't just built bigotted toward seniors
:D

:lookout: Easy on the seniors.............I'm one and don't have trouble hitting the brakes and not the gas pedal.....let me see was it the one on the right or the one on the left

A friend drives with her Left foot on the Brake pedal and Right foot on the Accelerator.
Doesn't DMV be strict with such style when taking driving test? (except if you are handicap)

Yeah, just like the whole Audi mess from years ago, it looks like Toyota will soon be proven to not be at fault. It's unbelievable that there are so many morons out there who think they are stepping on the brake pedal when they are really stepping on the accelerator pedal. I've said from day one that no car can overpower its brakes.

Here's the Wall Street Journal article:

:D

I know, I rewrote that post like 7 times trying to make sure I wasnt sounding too harsh...

I was just trying to mention, I saw an article where they had the stats and all of the accidents and all of the deaths happened with people over 40 and the older the driver, the more accidents/deaths there were.

Now, I know that if you took stats on EVERY accident, not just the Toyota ones, that might also be an issue, but it was an interesting stat nonetheless...

Still I had to "tread softly" on recalling that article! :D

And then there was that 76-year-old lady who smashed her Camry into a building and swore that she actually took the time to look down at her foot to make sure it was on the brake pedal. I knew that was a BS story the moment I heard it. First, it's difficult to see your feet when you're in the driver's seat.....you'd have to lean back and/or to the side to even see your feet. Secondly, who the hell would even think to look at their feet when they are in the driver's seat of a "runaway" car?

And to top it all off, the police found a video recording from a surveillance camera that capture the accident and the brake lights didn't come on until after the collision.

So yeah, people are morons and there's plenty of proof out there!

In the year long investigation, IMO they prioritize the cause to be
1. Electronic throttle-control systems
2. Brakes (overpowered by the engine??)
3. Sticky accelerator pedals
4. Floormats

Now, they can't prove a thing it the electronic throttle system...that professor is funny!
And that cars should stop when brakes is applied..

Will they continue this investigations? ..only to find out a chewing gum is causing the sticky pedal J/K. I mean, if this a drama(sorry to those crash victims), it won't benefit the majority of Toyota owners and even all drivers. Maybe they can divert some of the money from sessions to fund safety programs.

i dont give a DAMN what any of u think, there have been many reports on this with many brands of vec. as for the 4r, the josh had something like this is yes, the other day i did.also. my foot never left the brake, the engine was running fine, if i would have had my foot on the acelerator even a little, it would of reved higher. for what its worth, this is what happened --- i pulled into a parking lot, with my foot on the brake pedal the whole time & eased headon into a parking space, as i started shifting to park, with my foot still on the brake, (only, no foot slipping to gas pedal) it seemed as if when the lever got to N the engine suddenly reved way up , the vec. seemed like it wanted to launch forward, & the brake pedal felt as if it was DOING NOTHING!. so as i did a one legged leg press on it, i continued to park where it locked, but the engine still was reving madly, so i quickly turned off the key. people have given me such **** saying it was MY fault, even tho this all happened in a second i still insist it was something electronic. **** would of hit the fan if it happened while parallel parking or at a red light. & have not been able to duplicate it again either. i just pray it doesnt happen again & someone get hurt. . tough crap if any of u dont want to beleive it , but it happened! yes i looked down at my foot after i shut the engine off & it was still on the brake only! just in case any body has shit to say, like call me a moron, here u go ahead of time. :flipoff::flipoff:

chaz,

I dont' think anyone is saying that it is impossible for a glitch to happen. But at the same time, all of these fools will eventually be proven wrong. It's been proven that the brakes will overpower the engine in just about every reasonable scenario imaginable. Throttles these days are electronic and everybody knows that there can be glitches in electronics. Regardless of that fact, unless your brakes fail at the same time as a glitch occurs in the throttle (now what are the odds of that?), then you will be able to stop the vehicle.

I think the mat problem was legit. It makes sense. Floor mats that were causing the accelerator pedal to get hung up and causing the car to continue accelerating. No issues there, except that people could have controlled the car in various different ways (putting it in neutral comes immediately to mind) including firm brake pedal application.

Sorry, but all the media hype is just that--hype. I read a report where Ford actually had MORE "sudden acceleration" complaints then Toyota during that same time period, but you hardly heard anything about it in the news. I'm quite sure EVERY car manufacturer has these types of complaints on record...and I'm also quite sure that 99.9% of them are driver error.

There are isolated incidents that needs investigations.

If it happens to me, I will also demand for explanation.

Sad that those being sensationalized becomes a comedy later example(I can't remember details) the prius driver who is a corvette owner and can't shift to neautral?, the crying lady who was on the cellphone for 10 mins, and that tundra in a winding road at 50 mph. What I hate at that time was my wife choosed to drive our smaller vehicle with kids at the back,..no matter how I say youre safer in the 4R..I mean this is not fun anymore.

Atleast we can read or hear something to equalize those crazy stories(NOT ALL) and feel safer in a Toyota.

I think some of the Toyota owners have truly had the acelerator problem. But young or old it is unfortunate that some of them have jumped on the band wagon to try to get the easy money out of it. I'm glad the "black box" has provn the vehicle to not be the problem in most cases. But still yet, Toyota hopefully will continue to look into it to cure what ever the problem actually is.

Yes, I agree with you. There's no doubt in my mind that there was a problem with the accelerator on some of those Toyotas. Even Toyota admits to this. My issue is with the people who failed to control their vehicle when they experienced accelerator problems.

Audi went through a very similar problem with their Audi 5000 sedan years ago. The main differences between the Audi story and the Toyota story are just two things: 1- No Audi was ever found to have an electrical or mechanical problem that caused unintended acceleration, and 2- Audi was almost bankrupted by the negative media hype.

Old people dont belong on the road.

Jed, WTH do you enjoy writing novels in all your posts?

Its a combo of re****ed drivers and poor engineering on SOME vehicles.

A simple way to remember... "ABC backwards".

Clutch_____Brake_____Accelerator

Pedals are arranged in that order.

You obviously don't read much if you think my posts are like novels. You should really sit down a read an actual book instead of your daily dose of comic books.

But in the meantime, if you don't like my posts, then don't read them. K-thx-bye.
