Hey I'm currently doing the same thing in my '95, replacing all the stock speakers and adding a subwoofer. What year is your 4runner? However, I'm using different brands. (Focal 4" fronts, Boston 5.25" rears, Focal 27v2 11" subwoofer, Dynaudio 3" rear tweeters, and JL Audio A1400 subwoofer amp, Kenwood DPX500BT).

You will need these adapters for your 4-inch front speakers:
PVC Speaker Adapters - CNC Machined - In Stock or Custom Made

And yes, 4 gauge wire is what I am using for the amplifier. I bought an amp install kit off eBay:

This kit has all the wiring, fuse, and accessories needed to install the amplifier.

Feel free to keep this going as we get our installations in order and we can post pictures as well. One thing I'm concerned with is whether or not I need to route a remote turn-on wire from the head unit to the amplifier, or will wiring it to the battery just allow it to come on with the vehicle?
 
You do need to run the remote turn on wire. It is easy, it will be one of the wires included in the new harness. And the hook up on the amp will be clearly labeled.
 
I try to stick to the same brands if possible. Are you planning on running the sub off that same amp?
 
Are you trying to amplify the speakers as well? Or are you just needing an amp for the subwoofer? I like alpine's stuff as well as the Rockford Fostgate equipment. I run a little bit nicer alpine unit in the 4runner with alpine type R rear speakers and Rockford front 4inch speakers. Also running 2 12inch Rockford subs in the back. Also you can just run the amp wire through the firewall near the passenger side of the cab's firewall. Should be a grommet in there you can run it through.
 
Are you trying to amplify the speakers as well I will consult with crutchfield to finalize the wiring. I want to use the 5 channel amp for the 4 speakers as well as the subs on one channel. That was the amp they suggested. I got it quite a bit cheaper elsewhere. I really like Crutchfield and buy all my radios there. Speaker tend to run cheaper on Amazon or ebay as well as amps. I bought from Sonic Electronix and will report on their customer service. I have bought battery terminals and wire from dell city, a great source for solder on battery terminals preloaded. I will bore a new hole with grommet installed for my additions to the engine bay. I picked up this fuse block and will add 12V outlets under each front seat for phones, etc. Radio came today from Crutchfield!





My son liked it because it has a big source button. I have one in an 86 Olds older model and it has been a good radio. The usb flashdrive is what I like and it has never failed me.

I got the red wire from the fuse box tail light fuse out and cut the green. Put a fuse between them and have tail lights now:director:

Are you using that fuse block in the engine bay or exposed to the elements? I'd reconsider using that particular block if that was the case as it allows water to short out the circuit if you are not careful. I used them in the past for aux installs and they work well if covered. Now We only use blue sea system covered fuse blocks. I used to order stuff from crutchfield when I was younger and they have great service, I'd highly recommend them if you need help and info on stuff. I've since moved to custom audio builds and generally just buy the units from BestBuy if its something I need right away or order from amazon. Also out of the brands I've dealt with I think the one I prefer most is Alpine for headunits. Very nice interface and great value for the money. Only draw back is the option to change color of the face if that's something that is important to you. All of their headunits are blue colored interface with the exception of a few red ones.
 
You'll be fine, especially if you don't bridge the fronts, just try and buy a decent brand. Just fuse the wire appropriately. I would just look for an inline fuse. Easier to install and can be made waterproof very easily.
 
BTW, i saw you already bought most of your stuff but in the future or to others looking, I always recommend KnuKonceptz Home for wire and connectors. Great value for the product. Its been a little while since I got out of car audio, but $ for $, you could never beat his stuff.
 
Have to spend some time on the link. Built the sub boxes tonight. Got hurried and didn't research and measure enough but they will punch bass. A little tall and could have done better. Pictures to come.
 
The Alpine receiver I purchased only has two pair RCA out jacks but the JBL amp can sense the signal that needs to go to the sub and directs it to the sub automatically. Pretty cool. It also can turn itself on and off based on its realization of any signal coming to it. If you kill the radio it times out and shuts down. Also cool.
 
I just ran the amp cable in my 91 and i just taped it to a coat hanger and pulled it through the same spot as the wire bundle for the ecm it is easier if you remove the glove box and computer so you can get a hand in there to get the wire
 
Papawheelie, your 4Runner is a 1st gen, isn't it? If so you do not need the 4" conversion pieces listed by Chris Farley or the 2nd gen speaker boxes. I replaced the 4" speakers in my dash in about 15 minutes. Very easy if you are using the original spot. If you have nice plastic cargo trim in the rear don't cut it to put speakers in. I took out Pioneers and put in heavier Infinity Kappas:

Last weekend I cut thin plywood that I'm going to mount
6 1/2" speakers into and then cover them with the original plastic covers. My '89 is a DLX and never had rear speakers so I have to run the speaker wires to the unit. I have a Sony unit put in by PO but I'm going to put a Kenwood in after I get it painted. I have the same unit in the '00 and it's loud enough for me without an amp.
 
Waiting on the amp and some cables. Here are the boxes I constructed with an old friend and a few buds the other night. Much easier in his cabinet shop.









Been working on the sound deadening and insulation. Need to cut some plywood to install in the rear for my speaker to rest in. Will buy some of the foam shells they sit in I guess. Advice wanted!! I bought these infinitys.

Nervo I bought some 4 inch kickers to go there. Everything will have to be fed back from my amp which will mount behind the rear seats somewhere....haven't got that far yet. Mine is an 88 DLX. I am in this for my 17 year old. I love music and it will be interesting to hear this system play everything from Parliament funkadelic to John Mayer to George Straight!
