Its probably a stupid question..but would changing out speakers in my 16' trail premium make the system "louder"? My assumption with better speakers I will get better clarity but how does it effect volume. Maybe I listen to music to loud, but I feel like with all the windows down the XM Radio isn't very loud at its max!!

yes its doable. You need speakers with higher sensitivity. Not sure if there are any plug and play ones?

I contacted the gem audio folks to ask if I can buy the sub enclosure alone and this is what they came back with.
"Thanks for reaching out and your interest in our designs. Due to the nature of our sound solutions we do not sale our components separately. This is because piece-mealing would inhibit our ability to provide you with a satisfaction guarantee (which is of the utmost importance to us). "
It's too bad they insist on changing everything over to their system. I guess we'll wait for someone to buy the whole kit and replicate the enclosure.

anyone that can work with fiberglass can make you a similar enclosure.
I am watching this system also and I live 20min from them in Ahaheim CA. I need to stop in and listen to one in a 4R. OEM AP also does alot of local car shows/events here to let you try em out. Subaru community raves about the systems improvement just to stock speakers. I drove a '13 FJ w optional sub in back it blew me away for factory. If OEMs system thumps like that im getting it for sure. This system replaces every speaker including rear hatch for $1800. No splicing/hacking/reversible.

I wasnt satisfied with the factory stereo either, at first I tried just swapping out the speakers but I actually lost volume. Like others have said you could find a higher sensitivity set of speakers and maybe gain a tiny bit of volume but honestly I doubt you would notice the difference. Especially off the factory headunit. For more volume you are going to need and more power.
I have 75watts rms running to each of my front doors and tweeters (bi-amed) I can listen comfortably with the windows down at freeway speeds and the volume will typically be around 50, still clear with no distortion.
You don't need that much power, but you will need more than the factory head unit can provide. while you are it you might as well install a sub as well.

I'm thinking of adding a DSP (AudioControl LC7I) and amp (Kenwood KAC-M3004) to my current setup (factory head unit, Focal front/dash speakers, Polk rear/hatch speakers, compact Kenwood sub under passenger seat). I am trying to get a bit more volume and clarity out of this system. I had installed that Kenwood amp mentioned above but the bass volume was all over the place. On some songs, you couldn't hear it... on others it was all you could hear.
Your thoughts and input would be appreciated.

I went with a Pioneer D9605 5 channel amp, has enough power and fits under the drivers seat. I also got the JBL MS8 for my DSP. This definitly cleaned the sound up a little, and brought the low end back.
The under seat sub might be part of your problem, I tried one and it was awful. It can fill in a little low end but they just cant compare to a real sub. this will lead to problems when you turn the volume up and your focals can handle it but your sub cant. Also with the DSP is you will be able to run filters on all of your speakers, so bass should be more controlled
Another thing is your audio source. I download music and use a USB thumb drive. I try to get the best quality but they can still have small fluctuations in volume
Thanks for the insight!! I actually decided to try my hand at car audio this weekend. Ended up installing a 1000w amp tied in to the rear speaker wires (behind the HU). I followed AntMan's post on installing an amplifier which was AWESOME to say the least. The amp is connected to a 10" kicker sub which has filled in the lows perfectly.
Also, changed out the dash speakers to the gx302's that a lot of people seem to have done. This made a HUGE change. Not necessarily to volume, but so much cleaner sound.
So far I'm really happy with the set-up. Next..possibly tackle the front door speakers.
