hey i have the factory headunit in my 1999 sr5 (im missing the cd changer)and i wanna install a alpine amp (mrv-F300s) any idea how to do it since the oem head unit doesnt have RCA outputs. also the reason im useing the oem one is because i've allready bouht 2 different wire harnesses and the dont fit the plug i have. help with either of these problems would be great.

There's an amp behind the stereo that you have to remove in order to get to the correct harness.

See Step 4:

If you remove that, you can plug an aftermarket headunit into the harness (assuming you have the correct harness to go from aftermarket to OEM like this: http://compare.ebay.com/like/140413...f8d3d4c&itemid=140413941717&ff4=263602_325002) and you'll be set with RCA outs and everything.

Maybe you have already been through this, but you should really look into getting an aftermarket HU instead of adding an amp to the stock radio. The stock radio sucks for sounds quality. You will be amplifying a bad signal. An aftermarket HU would have its own internal amp.

I had the same issues, Its almost a gaurantee that those two wiring harnesses you bought do actually fit the "real" plug from the 4R. Remove your stock H/U. Look down behind there, you will clearly see a amp, small metal box almost the size of a aftermarket H.U. Reachup under it like your trying to reach into the engine bay. Back there is where you will feel two plugs with clips, use a small flathead to push them down while you wiggle them out.

Then remove the (3?) screws if i remember correctly from the amp and toss it in the trash! You will get much more superior sound from an aftermarket HU. Even if it is a cheaper model, i bought a Pioneer with all the bells and whistles from Best Buy for $100 and it made the output overall SO much more clean and balanced between my tweeters and door speakers.


BTW: You dont really HAVE to solder your connections if you do not want to. I always used bullet connectors with a nice stretchable sleeve to go over the harnesses afterwards. Look just as good, and sometimes is a better connection if your horrible at soldering like me

Thanks for all the help guys. I got the amp out and now I'm wondering what to do because the wire harness is perfect but there are two connections that I don't know what to do with. Its the 2 round plugs. I have no idea what they do. And the new head unit I'm going to has a space to plug the big one in. But none for the little one. (Btw the new. H/U is a pioneer deh-2700)

I'm not quite sure what you're talking about, but if you post some pics I'm sure we could help. You will not use all of the wires in the harness. Some will need to be just taped off and not used.

Ohh ok. i test the wires with a double a battery right? thats the why i was told to do it idk if its right.

Forget the last question about testing the wires. The harness I got has them labelled. But there are 4 wires that I don't know what to do with. They are the dimmer and the ground for the dimmer, the 12 volt batter constant and the 12 volt ignition/switched and the chassis ground

The 12 volt battery constant and 12 volt ignition/switched should be in your harness. Typically the 12v constant is red and the 12v switched is yellow. Chassis ground is black and should be in the harness as well. Dimmer and dimmer ground can be left out if I'm not mistaken.

This is correct, If your new HU came with a harness that has a c clip attached to it for the black ground wire, just snip it off and wire it directly to the 4Runners ground wire coming from the truck itself. The radio itself gets grounded when you actually screw the whole thing back in, you will notice this if you have the truck turned to the ON position, the screws will spark. That means it is being grounded.

Those two metal plugs are your signal for FM and AM. Just plug the bigger one into the rear of the deck. Tape off the other with some electrical tape just for safetys sake. Along with your dimmer wires, they are not needed.

Those are your antenna wires. Plug the big one in the deck and leave the small one. If you don't listen to AM radio you don't need it.

really? I thought I had read that the little one was for the antenna in the rear window and the big one was for the antenna on the fender. I could be wrong, I currently have the small one disconnected in both my trucks, I'll check tomorrow if I get any AM reception. In 3 years of ownership, I've never tried. Who says AM radio is dead??
