Stiff Gas (Accelerator) Pedal

Hey,

I have a 94 4Runner and the Gas pedal seems pretty stiff. I dont really notice it until I go and drive other peoples cars (No Im not a car thief) but I cant remember if it was the same on all the 4runners when I was test driving them about 6 months ago.

Is this normal?

When I let mates drive it they always stall it and then rev it really high when taking off from the lights.

Maybe there is an easy fix? Or something I can lube up to loosen it a bit?

Mine is stiff also, find I go way too fast in other cars as well.

I've noticed that Toyota's throttles are stiffer and more responsive than others. My daily driver is a VW, and the difference in the throttle and clutch causes me problems every time I switch off vehicles. Every time I drive the 4Runner, I over-rev the engine, and every time I drive the VW I almost kill it with not enough gas.

The throttle body needs cleaning, this is not uncommon, they get gummed up. A little cleaner, rag and long flat blade screw driver and about 10 minutes will make it feel much better.

Where do you clean? Just up under the dash around the pedal? Or somewhere in the engine bay?

i am pretty sure they are all like that, there is a good sized spring behind the pedal as well as one attached to the throttle body

You want to clean the throttle body, this is under the hood.

If you follow the tub from the air filter it runs to the throttle body, if you unhook the air tub, you will be looking inside the throttle body and the butterfly valve, it will most likely have some darker gunk around it, this is what you want to try to clean off.

My '92 v6 auto has a stiff gas pedal too. I've had a couple a ford ranger, a GM 3/4 ton, a dakota, a tracker, and a variety of cars and the 92' 4runner has the stiffest gas pedal of them all.

I also previously owned a '90 4cyl manual and the gas pedal had a lot less resistance and it seemed fairly normal for a truck/suv.

I just figured the difference between the two had something to do with either that it was a v6 or because it was a manual.

I haven't done anything to try loosening it up because it "aint broke".
