Stiffer spring with Bilstein 5100

Hello folks! Currently, I'm using 5100 with stock SR5 springs. This setup soaks potholes pretty well but not small bumps... The shocks fail to "eat" the bump, instead, I can feel every single one of them. My 4runner and me rise up and down with those small bumps all the time. It is super uncomfortable. I did my research on google and this forum, some of the articles I read suggests the stock spring is overdamped by the stiff shock, which causes the harsh ride. I wonder if Eibach 112620 / 112-620(https://bilsteinlifts.com/shop/toyota-fj-cruiser/toyota-fj-cruiser-2010-2011-2012-2013/front-lifts/toytec-eibach-front-coil-lift-springs/) will make the small bumps less bumpy? It has 620lb spring rate, which is stiffer than stock for sure. Please share your thoughts. Thanks!

Additional information about my 4runner:
1. Front 5100 is set at 0.85, so not much preload compare to the top notch.
2. Tires: BFG KO2 at 34 psi. Not a super high psi to cause the bumpy ride in my opinion.
3. Weight: Basically same as stock. No additional mod.
 
I am absolutely no expert, but i can't see how stiffer springs are going to help. if anything, i think that is going to make it worse?
anyone feel free to correct me:

heavier spring rate is going to increase resistance to compressing and further take the shock valving out of the equation

5100s i believe are digressive valved shocks, so the damping force is going to increase more rapidly with velocity.

i think the right way to do what you want is to use a spring rate that matches the weight of your vehicle (stock spring rate for your stock weight) and change the shock valving to tune compression/rebound damping

When I search the answer on this forum, I saw more than once that people say FJ spring works “better” with 5100. And FJ spring is stiffer than 4runner stock ones right? I’m confused now...

Are the tires C or E load rated? What did you drive before the 4Runner?



Load range c. I also drive my wife’s 1st gen BMW X1 sometimes, it also has pretty firm shocks, but doing a better job soaking bumps. I think I may just have wrong expectations on 5100.

I have the 5100's (Toytec Ultimate) with 650 springs and I also have a winch and SSO bumper. I don't find the ride to be too harsh, but coming from a Rubicon, it feels like a passenger car.

The ride is definately more firm that the wife's Highlander Limited, but this is a frame on body truck, so that is to be expected.

I'm curious about this as well since I am considering pairing these shocks with the factory coils on my SR5.
 
I've got the stock coils in front set to 1.75 and wheelers t13 springs in the rear (+13% stiffer than stock). It's definitely stiffer and you feel small bumps and undulations more, but the positive tradeoff is there is less roll and it feels much more composed on higher speed turns. It's the nature of having a high CG vehicle. Off road I cant really tell if there is a significant difference TBH (other than the additional clearance), but the positives on road outweigh the negatives for me.
 
Springs won't help, it's the bilsteins 5100's making it stiff.

Digressive shocks make you feel small bumps and large bumps more, but they do provide better handling then the stocks. IMHO

There are much better (and more expensive) shocks/struts you can buy, but everything is generally a trade off...

Different people has different preference. To me the comfort level drops down quite a bit, but the handling improves a lot. Less nose dive and less lean on turning. I may want to try some shock between stock and 5100 firm level.

When I ran Bilstein 6112/5160, I felt the rear shocks felt over-damped for the stock coils. The fronts already came with coils and felt perfect.

Increasing spring rate won't make it softer, but will help that awkward initial compression feel (if that makes sense). Additional weight helps.
 
I've got the Wheelers offroad front and rear coils with 5100's at the bottom setting on the perch. These will give you more lift than you have now, but they ride great.

You could go p metric if you don’t off road much, duratracs come in P, they also are a bit softer on the sidewall to begin with from what I hear.
