A while ago I posted this information regarding a noise at start up.
When starting my 06 V8 Sport 4x4 when the vehilce is cold (overnight or sitting a long time) I a get clicking/slapping sound here are the details.
1. Only after a cold start up. Temp where I live has been in the mid 30's -40's
2. Seems to only do it in gear F or R at low speeds or even when stopped in gear but with foot on the brake, like backing out of the driveway. As soon I put it in park or nuetral Idle climbs and noise goes away.
3. Can't hear it when driving more than 5 mph or higher.
4. Seems to go away once the engine is warm.
5. Doesn't seem to be influecned by steering, will still make noise sitting still in gear with foot on barke and no steering input.
6. Noise stays at a constant pace, doesn't speed up slow down.
7.Best place to hear it is inside the vehicle with windows up, with windows down its hard to hear over engine/fan noise, can't park and go out to listen for it oustide because noise will go away in park/nuetral.
8. Just hit 40,000 miles, only owned for about a month if this matters.
After several responses the general concensus was piston slap. However, after listening to you tube videos of piston slap 4Runners mine doesn't sound like those. The videos I heard are louder, more pingy/metal on metal sounding kinda like a diesel, and go away much quicker than my noise.
My noise is deeper in sound, more like the plastic fan balde rubbing on its surrounding shroud (I did check, but that wasn't it), sounds like it is coming from deep in the engine bay and maybe underneath the seats, and takes well over 5 minutes to go away if just idling and not driving.
Today was the worst it has ever been and its over 50 degrees out. Before I could only hear it when I put the vehilce in gear, now it comes and goes even if left in park. After idling for 5 plus minutes the noise changed to sound something more like a stone rolling around in a hubcap but the vehicle was in park and just idling in the driveway, nothing spinning in the driveline and no load on the egine or drivetrain.
When I drive around once things are warm everything is fine... no noise, smooth idle and acceleration, plenty of power and no check engine lights. Not sure what else this could be? Need your expertise guys and gals.
