Stock Radio Backlight Out (Flickers sometimes)

My GF's 2000 4Runner has had the stereo backlight out for a while now. It started by flickering, then got worse and worse. Now it never comes back on, except rarely over a bump or something, it flickers. Her clock also went out a long time ago.

I used to think they were related, but reading the forums, it looks like the clock issue is very common and it is separate. I am going to fix the clock this weekend, and I would also like to fix the stereo backlight.

Has anyone had experience with fixing one of these? I have seen a few threads on it, but none with anyone successfully fixing it. It gives me hope that it is still flickering, so it isn't burned out.

I am good with electronics and tinkering with things and I am confident I can fix it if someone has before. So, anyone seen this fixed?

Probably bad connections in the harnesses behind the stereo in the dash. The hard part is getting it all out. Once you do that deox all the connectors. That should fix it.

I've got the same problem with my radio now. It's annoying at night not to see the radio lit up. I'm assuming he meant to remove any corrosion off the connectors and the light(s) would return. Was the suggestion of "Deox" a solution to this problem?


Sounds like a pain to get to the radio. Does anyone have a procedure for getting the stock radio out for those that have never removed this area of the dash?

Looks like the radio should be easy once you take the dash apart.

My radio is flicking - going to replace the HVAC bulbs at the same time when I have it apart.

my a/c unit does the exact same thing. it has the led conversion and i've tried to take it out and wiggle the lights around and it worked for a couple days but now it is back to flickering all the time.
