Stock radio possessed

Hi. I have an 05 se. About a week ago the radio/single cd player unit started flipping through the preset channels. Playing a cd skips back to the first track. Also when it feels froggy, it will turn the volume down or up (depending on mood). When it goes haywire I can't turn it off. It doesn't happen all the time either. Just wandering if anyone else has had issues. I saw a thread about the jbl sterio but not the stock.

Welcome aboard! Go to a catholic church and get a bottle of holy water. Then sprinkle it all over your 4runner.

Yes. They are not working. I bought the car used about 4 months ago and they were not working when I purchased. The other thing is the radio backlight dims and brightens. I think I'm going to go with the chicken blood for cleansing. At any rate, it gives me an excuse to upgrade.
 
Mine is somewhat possessed also. But it only happens when the stereo gets below about 40 deg. F. the text on my lcd doesnt display, it will spit out all cds upon startup and intermittently turns on and off at will. If i try to press any buttons on the faceplate, it will turn completely off for a few seconds and then turn back on. It begins to chill out once the cabin begins to warm up, but is aggravating as shit until it does.

I guess in a round about way my question for you is, have you noticed if this is temperature related?

Holy Water, a Wooden Cross, a Bible and an Exorcist do little good when one's vehicle is possessed. BTDT.

Finally had my Toyota Dealer pull my stock radio out last Wednesday and send it to be repaired (the CD "Error" problem).
Strange feeling driving the 4Runner without any music, TOO Quiet. The service writer said it will be at least 2 weeks before I get it back.
 
Once, a few years ago, the volume mysteriously stopped working. The radio was on, but I suddenly lost control of the volume from both the steering wheel and the dash. I pulled over, killed the ignition then restarted it and everything went back to normal. It has not given any problems since. There was nothing unusal going on at the time that I can think of causing the problem. Temperatures were pretty normal, nothing extreme. I have the JBL stereo.
 
Well just to let you know its not only jbl headunits with crazy problems, its pretty much all toyota radio across the Truck/SUV line-up. Go up to the dealership and have it replaced or just get a sweet aftermarket system, your choice. Just know that its the fact that the companies(yes there are 3 different companies that make the same headunits for toyota) have weird problems with all their radios.

Yep. Thats it. It acts up when its cold. It didnt start until it dropped into the 30's. The cold snap also killed off my battery. I'll just buy an aftermarket. I need my toonz.
 
The Scion Head Unit I have in my 04 acts crazy now and then also. Changes stations on its own, display is blank but music is playing and no controls work. Usually a quick turn of the key to the start position will soft reset most of the electronics while driving. No the starter will not engage if the engine is already running. Also seems to be on cold mornings. Mine has never spit out the CD thou. Maybe your head unit does not like your "taste" in music?????:wink2:

I can not say I have seen my 08 with the JBL system do this yet.

As far as the battery goes, you have an 05, the battery is at least 4 maybe as much as 5 1/2 years old, very common.

I dont know how comfortable you are with taking things apart, but I think I may have fixed mine. i wont know for a couple of days in order to troubleshoot, but This is what I determined. It seemed as if the faceplate wasn't making a great connection with the motherboard of the unit. So the other morning I pressed in a couple of spots while it was acting up and sure enough it began to work perfectly until i lightened the pressure.

While I had the HU out of the truck to install the usa spec ipod controller I got for christmas, I figured i would take it apart to see if i could seat the connector better. I ended up taking the faceplate off, removing the screws holding the main board and sliding it slightly forward (im talking less than a mm maybe 1mm) and tightening those screws back down. Next when i put the faceplate back on, i made sure to put downward pressure on it while i tightened the screws. When I went outside this morning it was around 30 f and the radio worked like a charm. This may have been a fluke, but its 1/1 after doing this.

If you want to tackle this, let me know, i've found a shortcut to getting the faceplate off.
 
I just have the stock, single CD player radio in my '04 SR5... the volume knob drives me INSANE because it doesn't work... it does the exact opposite when I turn it up or down... and now the CD insert/eject motor is not functioning properly...

Just bought me an $80 Pioneer and hopefully that will work perfectly.
