Stock Radio

FirstGenRunner

I've bought a few parts off a guy, and he's offering up a radio out of a 4runner that I'm not familiar with. It's stamped Toyota, but has a CD, Tape, and AM/FM radio. The Runner is an 87 I believe. Does anybody know if this was a stock or option for it. Or my guess is that it was pulled out of a later one and put in here. Any ideas?

Kinda hard to see on my droid... I did save the pic and zoomed in.

Looks like a newer unit.

Is that a separate cd player w am/fm/tape?

hmmmmm... maybe it is a stock radio.

my '88 came with the am/fm radio only.

i think it had the same type of lines and buttons.

i remember seeing older toyota radios from other vehicles and they were silver.

does it work?

It does work. As far as CD players being released in the 90's. I remember the same, but wasn't sure if it was just my lack of funds that prevented me from even thinking of pulling the trigger on something like that.

Sounds like my suspicions are confirmed that it's out of something else.

Thanks.

The first commercial CD player hit the market in '82.

CD players would not have been an option on the 1st gens, but Toyota has used the same radio connector and double-DIN radio mount for years. That's a factory Toyota radio from a newer vehicle.

are you going to get it?

if so, research what other double DIN toyota units are going for.

also, scion headunits work, too.

i had my wife's 2k 4runner double DIN unit in my '88 4runner.

i've replaced that with a scion unit with ipod cable <--- i had to trim the radio bezel a bit.

good luck!
