Stock Rubber Rubbing?

Has anyone experienced any rubbing w/their o.e.m. tires. I've got the Dunflops on my 7month old 4R & it has never rubbed before, but just this week, it rubbed twice while making a sharp turn into a parking spot. The 1st time it happened, I thought it might've been due to pulling into the parking spot too fast, but when it happened the 2nd time, I really questioned why it did it again. BTW, the 2 time that it happened, I had the steering wheel turned all the way. Is this suppose to be normal? Any input would be appreciated!

BTW: I can't wait to get some 265/70/17 Revos & a 2"-2.5" lift. Hopefully the lift will avoid future rubbing

Nor have I heard of problems with going one size larger, 265/70-17.

I wonder if the noise was something else that may have sounded like tires rubbing?? Is there any visual evidence that the tire actually came in contact with the frame, etc.?
 
Funny you should mention this. I have noticed a strange noise when I have the steering wheel turned all the way to the right when making a turn, but it only happens when the wheel is turned as far as it will go. Can't explain the noise, kind of sounds like a grinding/metal noise.

Of course, I'm totally afraid to take it to a dealership, so maybe I'll take it to Discount Tire or so.

If anybody else has this noise and has figured it out, please let me know.
 
okay -- i have a lot of experience with rubbing and the sounds emitted therefrom ... so, i'll see if i can help ... what direction are you turning when you notice the rubbing? if you are turning left, then the rubbing you hear is eaith at the inner frame, or the front fender. if it sounds like metal rubbing, then it is the frame. if it sounds like plastic, it is the front fender. you can fix the issue with the front plastic, but really shouldn't have to ... and i highly doubt that's where it is rubbing. if you are turning right, then it's the same on that side -- either the inner frame or the front fender. in any case, a lift will help, and this is a problem you could definitely go to the dealer for --- since you don't have any suspension mods, they won't be able to place false blame on that, and will probably be able to figure out exactly what's going on.

you can also get a hint by looking -- if the front fender corner looks scratched up, then you know that's where the rubbing is happening. the inner frame rail though is more difficult to mark up so even if it is rubbing on the frame, it may be hard to visually find evidence of it there.

in any case, your stock tires should not rub. on the other hand, there are many vehicles whose stock tires DO rub on the inner frame rail at full lock...
 
p.s. are you running the stock rims?? that's another thing that would help pull the tire away from the possible rubbing areas... getting an aftermarket rim like a 17x8 with 4.5" of backspacing ...

just something to consider! :)

What year is your 4Runner?.

If it's an 86-95 it's most likely just the steering stopper bolts rubbing on the A-arms. They make a metal-on-metal noise.
 
No, it's an 04, got it April 17th and already have (gulp) 20,104 miles on it.

Guess I just love it that much...

I have noticed the same thing. It has done it twice now both times while at almost full lock to the right in a parking lot that was sloped. To me it sounds like the tire rubbing something good. I will crawl under tomorrow and look it over real good.

Did you ever find a solution?

As a side note I noticed a clank from the front suspension for the last couple weeks when going over a decent size speed bump. Possibly related? I don't know but both are not normal.
Any updates from you guys that had these problems?
 
I suggets to the guys having the rubbing problem with stock tires/rim or hearing a noise when completely turning the steering wheel left or right to check the stopper of the steering mechanism.

If you look underneath the A arm of the front suspension you'll see a little stopper that aligns with the steering mechanism.

If it is dry, dirty or rusty, it will make weird sound (metal contact to metal).

Do a search here. I remember others posting pictures for this issue.

Just put a little grease on the stopper... and problem fixed for a while.

60 second job tops!

Okay.... My clack if coming from above my front skid plate. There is a hole and what looks like a mount between it and the frame. When I pounch the skidplate there it makes the clack noise. The skid plate is tight all around though....:awais:

Is there saposed to be somthing there insulating it or keeping it tight in that spot that fell off?

Also, as for the noise when turning I can reproduce it any time I turn almost full lock to the right. It is now a metalic grinding noise that sounds like pads worn down to the rivits grinding on the rotor when I have the wheel turned far to the right. The noise stays as long as I hold the wheel to the right and move.

I will grease the stops tomorrow but I don't think they could make a noise like I am having......

Ok....Lubed the stops with some grease....

I then went around the neighbor hood till I came to a turn and made a very slow tight right. The grinding noise is still there.

Only does it on tight right right turns ( starts at about 30 degrees before full lock). Left turns are quiet as ever.

Sounds like rivits on a caliper but is not related to applying the brakes.

I have looked all over for any obvious marking on the wheels, tires, wheel wells, and frame and see nothing.
 
Definitely Dealer issue.
I have 265/70-R17 Bridgestone Revos without any rubbing; even before I lifted my truck I didn't experience any rubbing issues with stock Dunlops or "big" Revos.
Dealer is the only way to fix it (legally and at no cost). They MUST do something.

Hmm now that you mention it. I did notice the noise shortly after its first oil change.

I didn't think there was any room for adjust ment. Ill loosen the bolts and see if it will shift some. You may very well be on to something.... Have you had a similar expeirance or seen this?

Yeah. The truck is bone stock down to the tires. I never had any rubbing issues till now either.

Seems like the skidplate idea may be on to something cause the noise was first noticed shortly after its first oil change. If it's not there it's going in to Toyota.
