Stock Speaker Sizes

Hey guys... Sorry I couldn't find this in a past thread so here I go..

I just got a 1996 4runner limited and need to know what size the stock speakers are?!

Will I need to get adapters for them?? If so, where can I find them?!

I have a set of 5.25's and a set of 6.5's sitting around!

According to Crutchfield the fronts are 6 1/2" and the rears are 5 1/4", but can hold a 6 1/2".

6.5s should mount right up in the front and you will need an adapter plate for the 5.25s or you can modify the factory speaker plate for the rear. I believe the factory rears are 5s so a half inch plate should be plenty to drop in the rear speakers.

I'm guessing you don't have the JBL package or navigation. If this is correct then they are 6 1/2" front and rear.

Thx for the quick reply, I am glad I bought the right speakers, polk db651 & db6501. They've been sitting around for a while, just haven't had the courage to do the install myself yet.

The front door speakers are 6x9 standard or JBL.

To ronsta: Sorry about that. Crutchfield said that they were 6 1/2" so that is where I got my information from.

thanks all, the front doors do have a 6x9 silhouette outline to them but crutchfield's website insists 6x9s wont fit. Looks like components don't come in 6x9 either so gotta buy tweeters separately...

stock rear door sound is extremely weak, not sure if this is a problem with the rear speakers itself or if this is something that an amp would be a fix all for - boosting power for the 2 tweeters, 2 6x9s & 2 rear 6.5s

I don' think you would want 6x9's and another tweeter. Normally a 6x9 is either a two way or a three way. This means it has tweeters built in. I don't think you would want two tweeters.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind, I'm only considering 6x9 b/c that's what the stock fronts are...

The trend is away from 6x9's to components...much cleaner sound. 6 1/2's front and rear is the way to go with less power to the rear than the front...

I used 3-way components up front and they sound awesome...only time I had better staging is when I had Q-forms in the kick panels of an old car of mine.
