Stock stereo with sub

Anyone keep everything stock except add in subwoofers (and an amp, but thats a given...)?

How does it sound?

A lot of people tell me to change my speakers and head unit but I can't afford it. And I really am happy with the speakers but I'm just looking for a little more bump.

If you decide to do this...and dont want to go entirely "aftermarket", I recently removed my JBL sub/amp assembly and front/rear speakers. I put in an entirely new system. The JBL package is from on '05 SR5.

I had a JL 12" sub installed with the factory system, and it sounded like crap. I had the gain all the way down on the amp and the sub would still drown out the factory speakers.

I've been thinking about doing this too...I have all the crap, line out kit, amp kit, etc. It's been sitting there waiting for me to install it, but it's been too cold and I don't have a heated garage. The longer it sits there, the more and more I think I should just replace the head unit and do it the right way. I just didn't want to spend the money.

Did you take out the tailgate speakers as well? I am looking to buy some in stone color as I have the mirrors in those locations.

No I didnt take out the tailgate ones. I had a store do the installation and just had them unhook the far rear speakers (didnt want to pay more for them to be removed. I have all the other speakers though.

Do you already have an amp/subwoofer?

If so, let us know what you have.

As far as adding the subs, if you already have the equipment, do it. You can always upgrade later if you feel the stereo system isnt keeping up (which is likley to happen, depending on the equipment)

If you are looking at getting new stuff, look into getting a new head unit and speakers first. The people telling you to do this are right. It is a great place to start, plus you usually get some more compatibility to mp3 players and ipods and things like that.

Go stop by a car-audio shop and take a look at your options, listen to some of the stuff they have, mayb it will give you a personal insight on which way you would rather go.

I added an amp and 10" sub to my stock(non jbl) system and also added a scion HU. It sounds great. definitely not an audiophile system but for my interest in it and the $$ it was definitely worth it. Especially since I had the amp and sub from my old car. The bass doesnt drown out the other speakers at all. If you already have all the stuff just put it in and see, then if you think it sucks go for the HU and speakers as well.

SO to bring up and old thread..

I had my subwoofers installed two weeks ago but just got a new amp because the first amp I had broke and went into protection mode. Now with the second amp I have, I have to put it at half gain and with a little bit of bass boost it bumps hard. But on the head unit I have to turn the bass to -2 which is good for the speakers but either way it drowns out the speakers to a point where it sounds choppy, but really isn't.

I think I'm going to turn down the gain on my amp a little bit, maybe to 2/3rd.

Just thought I'd add in my two and a half cents.

I have the JBL system with Nav. I just took out the factory sub, and installed an audio control EQL running off the stock subwoofer high level speaker wires. Then the EQL runs RCA to a JL 500/1 amp which powers a JL 12W6. It sounds really sweet. Is it perfect? nope. And it never will be. Thats the problem with car audio...you will never be satisfied. My commuter car is running an aftermarket head, line driver, jl1000/1 amp powering 2 10 inch kickers, and a JL300/4 amp running a 3 way MB quart set..is that even perfect...nope...perfect is something to strive for, but is rarely attainable.

What kind of deck do you have?
I'm running an alpine 9835 and it has built in crossovers for the mid&highs.
It works great with my stock speakers (non-jbl) and 2 12's.
