Stock Sub Enclosure Mods

Ran across someone selling their stock sub from an FJ and they had mentioned they polyfilled the enclosure. I know the sub we have is only 45 watts rms and 8" but I feel like filling the enclosure might give even better sound.

Anyone mess around with the sub apart from the JL swap I saw posted? Any ideas to enhance the stock setup without replacing the sub/amp?

I did the JL swap, great sound. As for improving the sound with the stock setup, really not many options. Most will say an aftermarket head unit helps, but not sure what you're looking for as far as cost. The polyfill is used when you have a sub with an enclosure that isn't big enough. Adding polyfill causes the sub to act as if it's in a bigger box. I've used it before, not real sure it'd make much difference for the stock setup. It's just way too underpowered, not much way to squeeze more out of it.

I wound up going all in. I have 4 component Alpine Type R speakers, a Pioneer Premier FH-P8000BT head unit running to a 4 channel amp and an Infinity BassLink because I am not in need of the kind of bass that will break my eardrums. Also running the STI (Steering Wheel Interface) adapter so that I can keep my on-wheel controls of my ipod, and running my USB cable from the back of the head unit through the console to one of the dummy buttons, where I am installing an A/B USB coupler, essentially giving me an active USB port on my dash to the back of the receiver. This way I don't have the iPod cable dangling out of the glove box or something.

My only bummer is that in installing the sub and the amp, I am going to lose the flex shelf feature in the rear. I never had it before on my '98 Limited, but sort of liked the idea of being able to lift it up and get a second level of storage in the back. It is riveted down so I dont think I can remove it, so I will have to drill right through it when mounting the sub.

I looked really hard at modifying and upgrading the stock enclosure, but it just isn't going to get the job done. Fact is, I am a major audiophile and I need the sound to be clear and capable of some noise. A true sub and new head unit are almost a must for this (and upgrading to component polymica speakers will go a long way too), and if you want the clarity when you up the volume, you're going to need an independent amp too.

Just one man's opinion. My wife thinks I am out of my mind spending that kind of money. She thinks the stock system plays music fine, sounds fine, and is just dandy. I hear hollow in the highs and mids and I hear bass that is muffled and lacks definition. It must be corrected.

Most of what I am doing is standard flare, but I've gotta admit, I think running the USB through the console to the panel mounted coupler for an active console USB port for the iPod is pretty creative. Just hoping the size is close enough I won't have to modify my console at all. Ordered from L-Com

Yes yes, I know. I have a problem. Audio is life to me.

You can remove the Double Decker shelf. However, the floor won't be completely flat and there will a gap where the DD shelf hinges on (the few inches that's behind the second row) and floor space under the DD.

A member or two have removed theirs here with pictures. IIRC, you start with remove the bolts that hold down the cargo loops by the second row and the filler piece should come off, then followed by the bolts that hold shelf in place.
