Stock Suspension Redo

Hey all. I just bought a 1997 Toyota 4Runner and i'm starting to notice a vibration and that the suspension is basically shot.

The vibration, as I have read a few post here, seems to be u-joints. The 4runner does have 155,000 miles on it. Is there anything else it could be? Starts around 60-70mph, stops when I let off the gas.

Now the suspension issue...what/who/what kind would I need to buy if I just wanted to replace the suspension and replace it with the stock setup? I'm not sure if I want to lift it yet....I might be getting a new Tacoma soon.

Don't know about u-joints...

When you say suspension is shot I think of shocks first. Many choices. Tokico stock replacements, Bilstein heavy dutys, even pricey coilovers for the front end.

Many choices in replacement springs, Old Man Emu or 99 factory tall springs for a little bit of lift for your 97. Check the classifieds forum-they even have my old suspension on there...he he he

Do you have the dreaded butt sag? There was a factory Tech Bulletin regarding it.

You want stock then Sonoran Steel sells the '99 taller coils and new shocks for about $550 I think.

Check with your local dealer to see if your 4runner had the recall done on the rear suspension. They just ordered the parts to fix mine next week free of charge. It bottoms out on big bumps and has that pick up truck kinda bounce to it.

There was a recall? On what years?

Even though its a 1997, Toyota will still cover the recall? I'll have to call and find out.

I dont see why not, mine is a 1998. Give them a call on Monday and give them your vin number.

the recall is in effect for the 96-98 2 & 4wd 4runners. New rear springs and bump stops is all it is

Cool, just called Toyota and the recall was never done. So now I just have to make an appt. to get it done. Thanks all.

Alsoreal quick, I hit a pot hole/rough bump in the road and it made the whole 4runner jerk like crazy and almost threw me into the next lane. It was a small-med bump. Is this a shock issue or do I have other issues?

You still need shocks and new coils up front so I'd at least try to buy the shocks on a site like shox.com (Tockico is the stock replacement) so you don't have to pay for that labor twice on the rear.

Where can I buy new front coils from (stock height)? Shocks are coming soon.

Has anyone ever done a review on the different types of shocks that are offered for the 4runner? Because im really not sure which ones to get.
