Stolen Spare

So last night some mother F-ers jacked my spare tire. This seems that it is the second time that has happened to this car as I just bought it the cable was cut. So I spent $120 for the assembly, $130 for the tire and $50 for the steel wheel. A nice $300 bones walked away. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to secure the spare under the vehicle? Also this seems like a common thing because a buddy of mine said the same thing happened to him. Also they stole his catalytic converters. So I need to find a fix for that also. ANyone with any ideas on how to secure them besides wiring the cable with high amperage current?

Also how common is this thing anyway?

Do you have an aftermarket alarm installed? I know Viper has great add-ons to their alarms, such as proximity sensors (give a warning signal when someone's getting too close to your rig) and tilt sensors.

No, I just have the stock alarm. Which doesn't work until some enters the car with out unlocking the doors with the FOB.

I've actually notice many many runners without the spare. It seems this is a very common practice of stealing the spare. No one else experienced this? Did anyone try to use a cable lock to lock the spare to the frame? I hate to run without a spare or to keep it in the cargo area as there is precious little space as it is already.
 
I've never heard of someone stealing the spare...the part that holds the wheel itself has the loop that passes through the lug hole that you can put a master lock on

The problem is that they cut the cable that holds the tire up rendering the hoist useless which cost $120 at the dealer or $60 used on Ebay. Somehow I have to figure on maybe drilling a hole large enough on the steel rim (and then balancing the tire) that a steel 1/2" cable lock can fit.

Well I am sure the idiots were after the new tire on the spare since I just purchased the car, I changed all the tires including the missing spare and bought a new hoist ($120 from the dealer). So I am now thinking of getting a crappy $20 tire (read - almost bald) on a crappy rim and then still locking it somehow.

I've been looking at other 4runners while driving around and noticed the many of them are also missing the spare tires so it must be a Chicago thing then.
 
Trying to visualize a solution without going outside and climbing under mine. I would think that a high quality bike lock which uses hard to cut cable would work if you can find a part of the frame to loop it around.

Yeah or another solution - but probably costly is to weld a bracket under the wheel which is locking. Will need to think about this some more.....
 
Mine was stolen 4 years ago.I thought about replacing it and filling the top side of the rim with dog crap. Instead I drive without a spare, but got AAA instead. It is harder to steal my AAA card.

On a Colorado mountain biking forum that I read, there is a lot of talk about cable locks on bikes, and how worthless they are. Many people have reported bikes being stolen that were locked with a heavy duty cable lock. Apparently they are very easy to cut through. U-locks are the most secure for bikes, although that probably wouldn't work for a spare in this situation.

My 3gen 4runner has had its spare stolen too. the previous owner didn't know it until i pointed it out when i was buying it. he lived in chicago.

Haha I have been there more than a few times and certain places I wouldn't have minded passing right through

But back on topic - do you have room to store your spare in the cargo area?
 
Heh, if some idiot from Chicago wants to come to NJ and steal my rusted up spare steelie with the original stock POS Wrangler tire on it, they can have it. Getting that lock off even with the key must be a pain. (Wrangler will finally die when I change my Michelins (60k+) some time next year. Steelie will get painted, again.)
