Stowable trunk shelf

Runner Up

New member
I saw somewhere, can't remember where, that the 2003's had a stowable "shelf" in the trunk that could be raised to give you a second level of cargo space, or lowered so it could be stowed away.

Did this "shelf" only come with certain models of 4Runner, or were they really only offered on later models?

The only place I've been able to find them is on eBay. I've checked a few times, and usually there is one or two sellers. They were a factory accessory, like the cargo nets, mats, etc. that I have yet to find on any Toyota parts site. So, I am not sure where these eBay sellers are getting them from, but the few I've seen are new, not used, units. Typically, the prices are expensive for what you get.

An optional idea would be to make your own (there really isn't that much to them). Then, you can customize it the way you want.

I think some trim levels come with them. My 07 Limited has it. Honestly it's not that great because when it's in the up position there's about a 1 foot gap between the end of the shelf and the rear hatch, so stuff just falls down. The end is rounded to make it even easier for stuff to fall off it. It's a pain to get to stuff that ends up close to the seats under the shelf, with other stuff under the shelf in the way. It also takes up more than an inch of height when it's folded down, if that matters.

Removing it leaves a weird gap between the carpet and the rear seats. There's no carpet, and it's not really flat, and there are a couple mounting bolts where the shelf bolts on.

Wherever I saw it, I remember it saying the maximum load capacity was like like 85lbs or 150 lbs...something like that. I'll probalby build a custom shelf with 2x3's and ply-wood next summer, but I was just curious to know if this shelf was factory with all models or just with certain editions.
