I was told that I could put a GM 10 bolt derect swap in place of the back rear in my 86 4runner (springs and all) is this true? If so any suggestions for a front straight axle conversion besides using an older toyota one. I am planning on installing a rather strong v-6 or v-8 for playing in the mud and would like to feel safe with my rears. also open to suggestions on the trans and transfer as well. Motors will be GM

You can stuff one in there if you're handy with a welder but by no means will it be a direct swap. Using Chevy springs is a pretty common swap in but even that requires some fabbing and welding.
You can put anything in anything assuming you're handy with a welder and can make your own parts. A 10 bolt swap in is more incolved than you might think. Just use Toyota axles and put Longfields in them. You'll have plenty of strength.

The Toy rear is pretty strong in stock form, if you really want to build up the stock Toy rear, Pig and a few others do have some chro-mo shafts for them.
And no, the GM axle is in no way a direct bolt-in.
