Thanks Jeffh, looks like a blend door actuator, never knew what that was. The Haynes manual has nothing on it. I hate just unfastening things without a guide but sounds like its easy to flip that gear with minimal trouble. Also, an awkward place to get at. Thanks for the lead. I will take some photos and post when I tackle it.
That is the blend door actuator for the automatic climate control. I purchased a new one a few years ago after mine went all haywire. Before I bought the new one I did the "flip over the gear method". That lasted a while but now I'm just going to replace it all together.
Im doing that repair now, tho I have that on pause at the moment in hopes of finding a solution to my sticky/hard to move cables. I asked the local Toyota dealer about a recommendation as to what products to use, but that was hopeless.
I am still searching for a suitable product and procedure as I would like to make those cables move a bit more freely before I slap in the new actuator and my sticky cables causing this problem all over again.
