So my wife drove our 05 V8 runner on Monday, and when I got in on Tuesday morning to drive to work I noticed the stability, VSC trac and VCS OFF lights were on. I figured there was a problem with the dreaded smog pumps so I grabbed my el-cheapo reader and the only code I got was a C1340. Looked this up and google says it's an issue with the center differential lock circuit. I checked the CDL switch and its out, no flashing or steady CDL light, and the vehicle is turning fine so I figured the diff wasn't locked, and drove to work.
On my way home (lights still on) I noticed the CDL light was flickering, sometimes when going over a bump or similar, definitely not the standard flash when it's engaging. Check the code reader and the C1340 code is still present. On the street in front of my house, I figured I would engage the CDL and see what happened, it seemed to lock and unlock fine. Drove home and parked it with it locked.
This morning, I got in and only had the VCS off and diff lock light (expected for having the CDL engaged), pushed the button to unlock the CD and nothing. VCS and CDL lights on steady. Push it again and nothing, finally on the 3rd push the CDL light flashes like it's going to unengage, but it takes way longer than normal. I try turning a corner, and I can tell the CD is still locked. Push the CDL switch a few more times while driving and it's still locked. Now I stop and put the car in park, and suddenly I hear a CLUNK, and the CD is unlocked but the indicator is still lit up. Now I have the stability, VCS TRAC and VSC OFF and CDL lights on steady. Still no CEL.
I've been pretty good about engaging the CDL/ 4Lo on a regular basis and haven't had any issues up until this point. Is this an actual mechanical issue, or an electrical gremlin? Any pointers on where to start troubleshooting?
