strange grinding from front center of my 05

Hello. New member here, love the forum. I have an 05 limited with the V6 and without XREAS. It has a faint grinding sound coming from around the mid to front center when cruising at about 30-40 mph with no load on it. About the same kind of sound as a pad worn to the metal but not as severe. I don't think it's a wheel bearing because you can't change the sound turning left and right. I had a local shop check it out and they could not figure it out at all. I have put a lot of miles on with this problem and it does not change. I suppose I could wait for it to get worse and show itself but I hate trying to ignore it. Anyone have any guesses as to what it is? Thanks in advance.

i havent had any similar issues, is there any way you could get a video or recording of the sound its making that would def. help with diagnoses have you looked through your drive train to make sure everything is in place no debree caught in anything. kept drive shafts greesed, u-joints, those are the first things that come to mind

Yep, I'd craw under it and check everything I could. Push and pull on everything you can touch. Check your skid plates are tight and no bolts missing. Debris check

Crawling around is next. I'll see what I can find, thanks. If I can't find anything, I might let the Toyota dealer have a shot at it. My local shop guy is pretty good and he could hear the sound too but couldn't find it anywhere, even up on the rack running in gear, going around with a stethoscope. Crazy

As mentioned, check skid plates and also heat shield for tightness and bent edges that may be rubbing. If you've been in the dirt, gravel can find it's way into those places fairly easily and make noise.

Did you ever find out what the issue was?

I have the exact same sound except mine is coming from the middle rear of the truck. 04 SR5 4x4 V6, 125,000 mi. It is faint and has not gotten any worse since I bought the vehicle a month ago.

Same symptoms. Will not change turning left to right. Checked wheel bearings, shake test. Greased all the drivelines. Varies up and down with the speed of the vehicle. Can hear the sound coasting or under power. Next I am going to change the diff/tcase fluids but I am not optimistic.

I thought that it may be in the 3rd member, pinion bearing maybe? Don't really know how to test for that.

I have not taken it to a shop to run it while on a lift. If it really starts to bother me I might have to try that.

Front diffs have been known to make some noise due to bearing failure. Probably not much help, but its a place to start at least...

Had sort of a revelation yesterday about what may be causing this sound. Last night I 'set' the parking brake in the driveway before I put it in park. But the weight still shifted to the rear. So I put it in neutral and the truck rolled into the street. Did not hold at all. I can set the brake while coasting and nothing happens. I don't know if the parking brake pedal is supposed to have any tension, but mine does not. It goes completely to the floor without building any tension.

So now I am wondering if the grinding noise has something to do with the failed e-brake components.

I have read that these can be a PITA to work on. I have already had frustrations with the Canada car, being a Californian, just trying to the the old licence plate off. Screws were rusted bad. Starting to think the good deal I got on this may have been for a good reason.

I can assure you there should be tension and it shouldn't go to the floor unless the brakes are just shot. My brakes are good and the pedal stops like 2 inches from the floor
