So the other day I took my 1990 3.0 4runner out for the first time after FINALLY fixing my stupid knock sensor code (code 52). Went offroading and everything was running pretty good for the most part. Only odd thing was a slight lack of power but compared to my 95 but I think its due to a clogged cat, other than that no noices or anything. Then out of nowhere the thing starts making a bad knocking noise any time the rpms get above 2000 rpms. I limped it home and looked underneath and found no holes in the block or anything.
Next day I brought my mechanic from work over and fired it up, didn't make any noise at all for the 5 minutes we sat there. Got in and drove it around the block to try and get it up to operating temp (I have shitty Doug Thorley headers so it takes years to get the temp up) and right when it got to operating temp it started making that noise again. My guess is that it is rod knock, but shouldn't it be knocking at all times if that's the case? Why does it not do it when its cold? Does anyone has any ideas or ways I can test it without pulling the engine? Thanks in advance
