strange noise

OK, this is an air conditioning related noise because it doesn't happen when the a/c isn't running. If I am at a stoplight or in a drive-through lane sitting, the a/c condenser kicks off and I get a blast of hot air. That is somewhat normal except for the hot air part, normally it's just outside temp air. But I digress.

Every thirty seconds or less a noise like a cappuccino maker with the steam will blast for a few moments then stop. It repeats whenever I'm at a standstill. I don't notice it while driving, could be the road noise or it doesn't do it when moving.

What is it? I'm wondering if the a/c is having some problem while stopped and needs to be looked into. The heat is not acceptable either. I've never had a car get this hot just sitting. Is this a known issue for the V8 or 4th Gen?

Your A/C has Freon in it. There are high and low pressure cut outs to disengage the compressor to prevent it from damaging it self. It sounds like you have too much or too little Freon, should be an easy fix.

There are other more dramatic causes for what you're describing but I would start with Freon level.

Based on the laboring, coffee machine noise I would speculate you have too much.

Well that was it. Took the 4Runner to the service department and the system had 2.46 lbs of coolant which was way over the limit of 1.94 lbs. So they evacuated the system and recharged it.

Everything works fine and I have a/c when I come to a stop now without the cappuccino sounds.

I think they had secretly replaced my freon with Folger's crystals at the factory. Too much coffee will make anyone or anything jittery.

Excellent! :bigok: Glad to hear the A/C and the caffeine levels are in check.
