Strange thing in Air Cleaner

I was loking the other day at my Stock Air Filter in my 05 V8 Limited and there is another cloth-like screen above the filter. This would be after the filtered air. What is the deal with this? If I were to get a K&N, would I leave this in. I didn't spend alot of time looking at it but I have never seen a filter after the normal air filter.

Any thoughts?

Im not 100% sure what it is either but my best guess is that its a mesh screen for help limit water ingestion over the normal air filter...i put in a K&N and left that screen in there. You can probably get a small increase in Airflow without it (someone took theirs out) but with the tendency of K&N equipped cars to get oil on the MAF sensor, i left it in for safety.

I've seen these on other cars and they're to smooth out the air flow (less air turbulence in the flow). More for the sensors than anything else.
