Strange wind noise with cross winds

I searched and couldnt find anything specific so either I didnt search correctly, just couldnt find anything or no one else has asked

Anyhow, normally as I drive down the freeway, at any speed, everything is fine, however out here in CA we sometime get severe cross winds and when we do and I'm driving, at times I can hear a low dull whistling type sound.

The first time I experienced it was when I was bringing my new to me 4Runner home and actually pulled over a couple times because I thought it was strange. About half way home I realized the severe cross winds were causing it so I wasnt too concerned.

Now that spring is here so are the winds and anytime I drive out of town and there is a severe cross winds the noise comes back but only with a cross wind, pretty strange.

Every time I've attempted to locate exactly where the sound was coming from, of course it would stop. It almost seems like its coming from the dash area but I'm really not sure.

is you air on or blowing? could it be excessive vacuum on the vents or HVAC system. try it with the air on or off, what ever your normal setting is while it happens.

Try switching from fresh air to recirculate and see if it makes any difference. I have a car that whistles when the fresh air is on, but not with recirc.

You might also mess around with the sunroom and see if that has anything to do with it.

Are all your door seals in good shape? How about wind deflectors, roof racks, lights, or other aftermarket stuff?

It's usually either the door rubber, or one of the windows isn't all the way up. Or, conceivably, one door isn't shutting with full clamping force.

All weather seals seem to be in great condition but I'll double check to be sure.

As to after market stuff, I have a wind deflector but it was not there when I first drove it home and heard the noise as well as my factory roof rack.

I also picked up a safari rack that makes its own wind noise, waiting on the fairing to see if it quiets down but the noise I'm referring to has done it without the safari rack installed.

As of right now, I have not installed any lights because I'm still trying to figure out how I want to install them.

Mine does the same thing. It's the door seals. It's always the one opposite the way the wind is coming from. Kind of like letting the air out of a balloon slowly in bursts.
