Stripped bolts?

Anyone know the easiest way to remove bolts that are stripped?
I tried vice grips and WD-40, but I ended up destroying the top of the bolt that way

I'm going to try and drill it out, but I was just wondering if anyone had any other methods?

Well you tried some good ways to get it off, vise grips and WD40. I have drilled through bolts, to change a ignition switch you have to drill out the bolt since the head is broken off at the factory.

If you can get a reciprocating saw in the area, you can saw off the head. A hack saw would also work. You can also try a stuck bolt & nut remover, a damaged nut & bolt remover and if all else fails use a Tap set. See link:

I saw a Bob Villa commerical on the Damaged bolt/nut remover. It actually look like a neat idea. (up-date: I just noticed on this link, it has a video with Bob Villa showing off the product.)

I second the bolt remover from Sears. Personally I yet to need to use it, however I do own and used the stripped screw remover on many occasions.

Went down and checked the tap set out just now, couldn't justify $30 for 5 sockets. Figure I'll just go down to my mechanic and see if he'll rip it out for me as a favor if I can't grunt it out with vice grips.

Arrrr... pain in the ass.

I'm trying to get the front skid plate off. Easy task, no biggy, 4 bolts holding it on. I get under there, remove 3 of them then I get to the last one and it's stripped to hell from the previous owner or whomever. :twak:

Stripped bolt

Use a pry bar to push down on the skid plate and an air rachet on the bolt.

I have two broken bolts, one on the skid plate and one that holds my fender flare on. any one know of any tricks to get these things out????

Same problem I have right now
If the end is totally gone, get a drill and drill it outta there.

Stripped Bolts

I`ve seen this done a few times, but never tried it.

Get a bolt about an inch long and slightly smaller diameter and weld it to the stripped bolt. Let it cool so you can touch it without being too warm. Then turn the new bolt. The heat from welding it frees up any rust. You probably have to be a good welder.
