STS Rear Mounted Turbo - Drivetrain?

OUTRNNR

I was considering contacting STS about building a custom Rear Mounted Turbo for my 4Runner based on the Tundra kit. I recieved an email from them not too long ago saying that they did not offer a kit for the 4Runner, but that I could have a custom kit built based on the Tundra build.

I was wondering a few things regarding this:

Most likely I would get 5-7 lbs max of boost, which would probably translate into peak horsepower of around 350-375 and 375-400 ft-lbs of torque at the flywheel.

What effect would this have on the 2UZFE engine? Would I run the risk of exceeding stress limits with this amount of boost? How would boost affect vvt-i?

What effect would this have on the drivetrain, specifically the transmission, front, center and rear difs? Do you think the stock components could handle this?

Does anyone know anyone who has this system on a Tundra? I wonder if any upgrades to the drivetrain are needed.

Thanks!

OUT,

I dont believe that anyone has that kind of info that you are looking for.

although 5-7psi sounds like a decent kit that would not involve an aftercooler.

I would believe that the v8s internals would be strong enough to take that kind of boost but again, alot of research would be needed.

As for rear mounting the turbo, im not sure where they would rear mount it as the under section of the 4runner is pretty taken up already unless it was on the left side.

I think that the tranny might have issues as im sure that its not classified to handle that kind of power. The same reason that I think that toyota decided to yank the TRD supercharger on the pre 05 models.

alot of research is needed before this could be done.

Yeah, I know not a lot of people here have added that much power to a stock drivetrain, I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this type of stuff in general, maybe from building other cars.

5-7 lbs of boost isn't alot, its kind of like taking a car that runs fine high in the mountains, down to sea level, and it still does fine. The main thing I'm wondering is since I'd be adding 70-100 HP to the system, if that would exceed the safety factors set in place by the engineers. I guess the only way to know that is to ask them. Any one speak Japanese?

As for room, it seems like there is plenty where the current muffler is. This kit is designed to run without a muffler (the turbo is the muffler) then run a pipe out the back. The 4Runner has a high floor so mounting the turbo out of harm's way should be no problem, and I'd have to be driving through some pretty deep water to submerge the filter.

Thanks for your input.

Research the problems with under vehicle turbos since there are issues with reliability and you don't want to off road with them. The turbo is too exposed to everything under there and I've read about the housing cracking due to cold water splashing on the hot turbo housing plus anything that could hit the turbo would be bad.

I have this truck right now. It has a 5 psi rear mount kit and the truck is GREAT! Excellent power and nice overall feel. I took it on trade so i dont know how extensive it was to install but judging by the way it looks on here i may have one of nearly none....lol
Its clean and runs like stock when driven normal.
