ok, i dont know how it works with a 5 spd, or on 2nd gens, but im assuming the bind is coming from being in 4wd on pavement, perhaps in 2nd gens the center locks as soon as you put it in 4wd, which would mean that you REALLY should not drive in 4wd on the road, you can cause damage to your tires/suspension/drive train/lots of other stuff. as far as going to N in 4x4, you should just be able to put it in N, perhaps shifting the 4wd selector into N would help, but i dont see why you wouldnt be able to shift into N, it doesnt even make sense, maybe a 2nd gen offroader can elaborate.

but never ever drive on pavement in 4wd unless u have deep pockets and like the sounds of stuff breaking

TESTING IT OUT

I WAS JUST GETTING IT READY FOR SNOW AS I PUT IT IN NETRUEL THE TRK. SEEMS TO GO IN NETREAL WITH SHIFTER , BUT THE 4WD LIGHT STAYS ON IT DASH AND I THINK ITS STILL IN 4X4.
4X4 HIGH THAT IS, SHOULD I BACK IT UP GO FORWARD????WHEN I PUT IN IN 4 LOW IT GOES RIGHT IN I THINK I AM NOT DOING IT RIGHT

Well like the other post said, don't use 4wd on pavement unless there is a lack of traction which allows your front and rear to spin at different speeds. 2nd gens and most 3rd don't have a center diff, just a transfer case, so the front and rear are locked together whenever your in 4WD. When you are turning into a parking spot your rear outside and front inside tire need to spin at different speeds, in 4WD they are locked together and can't do that so you get binding. On snow, dirt or other limited traction scenarios they can brake free and spin easily so no binding. As for neutral, I assume you mean 4wd neutral the 4x4 light will stay on as you are still in 4wd just neutral. Seems you have a 5 speed put it into 4 neutral and leave it in 1st and let go of the clutch slowly, if it tries to grab and move then your neutral is not working, you should be able to let off the clutch in gear and 4 neutral and idle.

thanks pat

thanks pat that explained the binding, i will try to unlock today, my 4 runner is the same color as yours pictured.

netrual

netrual works pat but the dash light does not go out it says 4wd i think it not realised right i will try today. i still think i am in 4x4 but the tranfer case shifts right 4x4 L 4x4 high netrual etc, but the light stays on

From what I can garner it seems like you are concerned about the 4wd light staying on while you are in 4wd neutral. This is normal, the light will stay on until you switch back to 2wd. So the 4wd light should be lit when the transfer case is shifted into 4h, 4l or 4n. As far as the color goes, nice, the dark red is my favorite color, I had a 93 p/u which was called garnet, then I had a blue and a green tacoma before getting the runner. It is called sunfire red pearl now but is similar to the garnet you have and I am happy to have this color again. Good luck with the Runner.

thanks pat again

pat you were a big help
thank you
bob
p/s i am now not worried about the binding as its normal as i will use 4x4 only when needed,
pat one last question what kind of gas mileage do you get

Best mpg I've ever gotten was a highway run through NY in August, I got 24.7 mpg. Average w/ my mix of mostly in town and some highway is 18-22, usually closer to 18 all winter and back up to low 20's in the summer. Mine is the 2.7 4 cylinder w/ 5 speed though.

gas milage and 4x4

thanks all 4x4 works great just lack of knowing how to use it . i am fine now gas mileage really is bad but runs great, about 10-11 mpg???is it posible fuel presure reg or something cause extreme bad gas milage, it runs like a clock
thanks
bob

need help very bad gas mileage

:( i have a 95 sr5 v-6 4x4 5spd v-6 4 runner , i had it 1 month, i have gotton 10 miles to a gallon at best 9 miles to a gallon last tank 8.9 to be exect, it runs real nice has just passed pa emissions tests, does not seem to leak gas i live in the major city but at 10 mpg i drove 50 miles of 160 on highway, sometimes it seems like a slight flat spot in it when you go fron 1st to second, but it runs real good, is this why maybr i got a good deal on this truck, i love my truck
